ASK and You SHALL Receive

Ask, Seek, Find, Knock,

Daily Spirit & Word, 633: Ask and You Shall Receive.

Good morning my friends, be ready to be ENCOURAGED TODAY!

You know the hymn “What a friend we have in Jesus”? Well in the first verse it goes;

“Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!”

All Because:

My friends, when Jesus gave us the Lord’s prayer and told us to ask for daily bread, He didn’t just mean for us to ask ONLY for bread. Whenever you have a NEED of any kind in your life, THEN your Heavenly Father wants you to come to Him with that need.

  • If you have a need for a wife or husband, go to God first, before trying to find one for yourself. He’ll bring the right person into your life.
  • If you have a need for employment, your Heavenly Father wants you to be working, so He’ll supply you with a job.
  • If you have need for a house, your Father knows you need a roof over your head.
  • If you have a need for food, then ASK.
  • If you are sick, go to your Heavenly Father and get the fellowship to pray for you.
  • If you are lonely, come to your Heavenly Father first.

So many people have NEEDS in life, that they don’t bother God with, they try always in their own strength to meet those needs. Instead of going immediately to Father God, they’ll go to a doctor or the chemist. Instead of asking God for money, they’ll go and get a loan and get into serious debt.

Remember, “it’s NOT by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit says the LORD.”

Sometimes we’re experiencing a lack in life, simply because we didn’t ASK God.

James 4:2 “You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God.”

Ask your Heavenly Father: Think about he PEACE that you are often missing out on by not taking all your needs to Him.

What a friends we have in Jesus,
ALL our sins and griefs to bear,
what a privilege to carry,
EVERYTHING to God in prayer,
Oh what PEACE we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless PAIN we bear,
All because we do not carry,
EVERYTHING to God in prayer.

Matthew 7:7-8
7  “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
8  For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

What NEEDS do you have in your life that are not being met?

I want to encourage you today my friends, take them to your Heavenly Father.
Ask Him in the Name of Jesus.
Pray to Him in the Spirit.
Sing songs and presents your requests to God with thanksgiving in your heart, knowing that He hears you when you pray in faith and that He longs to give you what you need.

I’ve found that the times when I’m not praying very much for things is when I’m quite well off. We take things for granted and forget that everything we have in this world comes to us because of God’s grace, love and mercy. So if you are NOT in need just now, then be sure to give the Lord thanks and praise. Honour Him by giving some of it away generously to those who are experiencing lack in their lives. Who knows, you may be just the person that the LORD has gifted to answer someone else’s prayers.

Have a blessed Saturday.

We’re off to the Lord Mayor’s Parade in the City of London today with some of our grandchildren.

Don.

Even ‘good’ people need Jesus

Using God's Law to lead to an awareness of our need for Jesus Christ.

Daily Spirit & Word, 632: Even ‘Good’ People Need Jesus.

Learning To Depend Upon The Holy Spirit.

Good morning my friends, you know something, we can try with all our might to win people for Christ, we can use persuasion, illustration, argument, reason and personal testimony, but without the Holy Spirit all of that is worthless. You see my friends, we need two basic things to win people to Jesus: and they are both the same:

  • First, we need to be praying for the fullness of the Holy Spirit within ourselves.
  • Second, we need to be praying for the Holy Spirit to be at work in the lives of those we want to draw to Jesus.

God’s WORD will do it’s work: Sharing the Good News (Whole Gospel) will bring FAITH to believe in Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit will do His work to draw them to put that faith to work and trust in Jesus for Salvation.

Without the Holy Spirit all our work is futile and empty. Jesus said, “Apart from Me, you can do nothing” John 15.

THANKSGIVING VISIT

Last night was a perfect example: A young couple who’d asked for a thanksgiving for their children in church needed to be prepared for the Service (A Thanksgiving is not the same as Baptism). There was an immediate warmth and welcome in the home when I arrived. The children were excited to see me and the mum and dad were very friendly, alert and ready to talk.  The wife had attended some school services at church and a thanksgiving service for one of her friend’s children, but other than that she’d never attended church regularly. The husband, though he was baptised as a Roman Catholic, had never gotten into attending church. He had gone to confession as a boy with the Priest and said his prayers occasionally. The couple had four children and had just gotten married a few weeks before last night’s meeting. The children attend the Church of England primary school.

Though they were not ‘religious’, as we chatted it became obvious they were; decent, hard-working, loving and ‘good’ people. They didn’t see the need for going to church or for being religious. I asked if they thought they were good people, of course they did. Then I asked them, “Are you good enough to get into Heaven?” They immediately and enthusiastically replied “Yes!”.

I pulled out one of our wallet tracts; they’re brilliant for this kind of witnessing situation. In the room were mum, dad and the twins. I shared out the tracts and gave one to each of them. There’s a series of good humoured questions. I introduced the tracts like this; “I’ve got a little wallet here, it’s not real, but it looks real. I want you to imagine you’ve just found a fat wallet full of real money and credit cards, let’s see how you would each answer the personality analysis questions”. The giggled when they opened up the wallet and were impressed with it, because it looked real.

BTW: Before going into the house, I had prayed on the way in the car. I asked the Lord to cleanse me, fill me with the Holy Spirit and guide our conversations. I asked the Lord to be working in the lives of these people that I’d never met and by His Holy Spirit to be drawing them to faith and trust in Jesus Christ. As I knocked on the door I asked the Lord to bless the house.

Going through the questions, we listened as they each explained their answers. It’s amazing how God works on people’s conscience. How the right use of God’s Law revealed in His Commandments enables people to see that they’ve offended God. Often in small ways, without even realising it.

Here are the questions on the Wallet Tract:

PERSONALITY ANALYSIS

1. If this was a real wallet, packed with real money, would you: A. Keep it? B. Take it to the police? C. Give some of the money to the poor? ……………………………………….

2. You have been underpaid for years. There’s a BIG mistake in your paycheck to your advantage, would you: A. Tell the boss? B. Keep quiet? C. Give some to a church? ………………………………………….

3. If telling a white lie would save a friend’s job, would you: A. Tell the truth? B. Act dumb? C. Lie? ……………..

4. Do you consider yourself to be a “good” person? A. Yes. B. No. ………………….

5. Have you ever told a lie for any reason (including “fibs” and “white” lies–be honest)? A. Yes. B. No. ………………………

6. Have you ever stolen something–irrespective of its value (listen to your conscience)? A. Yes. B. No. ………………………

7. Would you consider a person who admits that they are a liar and a thief, to be a “good” person? …………………………

8. Who do you think will enter Heaven? A. Those who say they are good when they are not? B. Liars and thieves? C. Those whom God has forgiven and cleansed of sin? …………………………….

9. Did you realise that the Bible warns that thieves, liars, fornicators (those who have had sex out of marriage), idolaters (those who create a god to suit themselves), adulterers, and the covetous (the greedy), will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven?

……………………………………………………………..

10. Did you also realise that the Bible says “whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart”? On Judgment Day God will bring to light “every secret thing, whether good or evil.” When you stand before God on Judgment Day, will you be innocent or guilty? The Bible warns that if you are guilty you will end up in Hell. God provided only one way for you to escape His just and holy wrath. Because He is “rich in mercy,” God sent His Son to earth in the person of Jesus Christ — fully God and fully Man. Jesus suffered and died on the cross, taking upon Himself the punishment you deserve for your sins against God. Then He rose from the dead and defeated sin and death. We broke God’s Law, but Jesus paid our fine. That means He can legally dismiss our case. He can commute our death sentence. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Please, repent (turn from your sin) today and place your trust in Jesus alone for your salvation. God will grant you everlasting life. Then read your Bible daily and obey it. …………………………………

Once you’ve trusted in Jesus for forgiveness and New Life: Start sharing your Lord with others.

I’ll not go into all the detail of our conversations and their answers. However, the couple and the children answered the questions honestly; and this led to a wonderful presentation of the Good News of Jesus. Afterwards the couple and the children were so amazed, the man of the home said, “When you explained that Jesus died upon the cross for my sin, it was as if a light had been switched on in a dark room.” I asked them all if the Cross made sense to them, they said, they’d never seen it that way before. The woman explained that she was always puzzled by the cross of Jesus and questioned why He had to die, but now it makes complete sense to her. “He took my place upon the Cross, so that I could be forgiven”.

I finished up by encouraging them to turn to Jesus, confess their sins and trust Him as Lord of their life. Giving the kids a Ten Commandment Coin: the parents a little Gospel of John and a tract that explains all about the Christian faith. I asked if they would read it? They assured me they would. I said BIBLE means; Basic, Instructions, Before, Leaving, Earth. So read your BIBLE every day, it’s your Spiritual food, Spiritual Breakfast for your soul.

Witnessing doesn’t get much better than that. Praise the LORD! He opened up the door of their hearts and set them free from Satan’s grip.

Psalm 19:7-14
7  The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
8  The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
9  The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring for ever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous.
10  They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb.
11  By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
12  Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults.
13  Keep your servant also from wilful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression.
14  May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

I’m sure they’ve got a lot more to discover about Jesus, church, the Bible, the Holy Spirit and walking in faith, but what an amazing beginning.

Please pray for this wonderful family, that they will turn in faith to trust in Jesus Christ and receive Him as Lord.

My friends, never give up on sharing the Good News of Jesus in such a way that you help those who’ve been kept in the dark by Satan from seeing the light of the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ, and with God’s help in the power of the Holy Spirit, enable them to gain a knowledge of their need for forgiveness and for the ONLY Saviour, Jesus Christ. God’s remedy and cure for the treatment of mankind’s sins. Amen!

Keep going for Jesus.

Don.

P.S. Why I use God’s Law (The Ten Commandments) before I share the Good News.

  • The Law of the Lord is perfect converting the soul.
  • The Law is a Schoolmaster to lead us to Christ.
  • By the Law is the Knowledge of Sin.
  • The Law cannot save us, it merely leads us to know that we need a Saviour.
  • The Gospel is God’s remedy for SIN.
  • Jesus is the Saviour who died and rose again to SAVE Sinners.
  • Jesus came into this world to SAVE sinners.

The Commandments just open a person up to an awareness of their need of a Saviour, Jesus is that Saviour who died and rose again from the dead. When a sinner repents and trusts in Him as Lord, they will be cleansed from all sin, forgiven and given New Life (New Birth, Born Again) and their place in Heaven is secure.

He left this world to return to Heaven so that He could send the Holy Spirit to empower His followers to share the Gospel all over the world: Get full of God’s Holy Spirit, share the Good News, make the most of every opportunity to bring one more to Jesus.

Jesus Comfort In The Face of Death.

The Revelation of Jesus comes to those who are obedient to His Commands

Daily Spirit & Word, 631:

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you.”

God’s Comfort In The FACE of DEATH.

Good morning my friends, I know the title sounds bleak, but bear with me because there’s great encouragement and comfort today; God WANTS to REVEAL Himself to you today.

When Jesus was nearing the end of His earthly mission and He knew what was about to happen to Him, His thoughts were not for Himself, He was thinking about how His disciples would feel once He’d gone back to Heaven. He was thinking about them all because He loved them and knew that they all loved Him too. When someone we LOVE departs this Earth, it hurts. No matter how prepared you are for that event, deep down it tears something from your soul when a loved on leaves.

I’ll never forget my own mother’s death: We knew a week before she died that she’d only have one week left in this world. The Doctors had to stop her Dialysis Treatment: She was in the Renal Ward and the treatment wasn’t working. She was also riddled with Cancer. I had to break the news to my mum along with my dad that she only had a week to live. Although everyone knew she was coming to the end of her life, when she eventually died it was as if something was ripped from my own soul and a sick, empty feeling continued for many hours in my stomach.

When Jesus knew what was about to happen, He felt for His own disciples too. So with these words our Lord began to comfort them: Imagine getting this kind of assurance at the impending death of a loved one.

John 14:15-27 God’s Comfort In The Face of Death.
15 “If you love me, you will obey what I command.
16  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counsellor to be with you for ever—
17  the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
18  I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
19  Before long, the world will not see me any more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.
20  On that day you will realise that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.
21  Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.”
22  Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”
23  Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
24  He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
25  “All this I have spoken while still with you.
26  But the Counsellor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
27  Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

This whole passage is bound up in LOVE:

  • The LOVE: That God has for His Son, the Son (Jesus) for the Father (God).
  • The LOVE: That God has for those He’s brought to His Son Jesus.
  • The LOVE: That God the Son has for those He’s been teaching and training for over three years.
  • The LOVE: That those who’ve been following Jesus have for Him and for God and for each other.

It’s ALL ABOUT LOVE: And love hurts.

Verse 18: “I will not leave you as orphans”… An Orphan is one who’s bereft of parents. He’s hurting because he’s alone in this world. But Jesus is promising that they’ll get another counsellor and guide: God the Holy Spirit. God the Son is going to be replaced by God the Holy Spirit. It’s going to be different though; instead of God walking with them, talking with them, eating with them, He’s going to be INSIDE them. They’ll know God from now on in a very different way.

There is a condition attached to this REVELATION that’s about to happen.

“If anyone loves me and obeys my teaching”

The internal revelation and presence of God the Holy Spirit will only happen to those who are OBEDIENTLY seeking God.

God will never and can never show Himself to those who don’t want to know Him: those who are DISOBEDIENT.

NOTE: That doesn’t mean we need to be sinless or perfect to get a revelation of God. It just means we’ve come to God in weakness, repentance and faith, trusting in His Divine goodness and forgiveness through Jesus the Son, with a desire to be obedient to all He’s commanded: then we’ll get the revelation, presence and love of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

But what awesome PROMISES: God on the inside.

“My Father will love him” Awesome.

“He will be loved by My Father, I too will love him and will SHOW MYSELF to him”. WOWzer! Jesus is going to SHOW (Reveal) Himself to you.

Have you had that personal REVELATION yet?

It comes to EVERYONE who’s born of God’s Spirit.

When you are BORN AGAIN you KNOW Jesus, because He SHOWS Himself to you.

All this shows us how DEEP the Father’s LOVE for us is; and How interconnected God is: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Have an awesome day with the RESURRECTED Lord Jesus Christ.

Be filled afresh with God the Holy Spirit NOW!

Be assured that you belong to Father God Almighty and He LOVES you. Amen!

Don.

Jesus Died For His Enemies

Jesus gave His life for His enemies

Daily Spirit & Word, 630: The Extent of Christ’s Love.

He Died For His Enemies

John 15:13 “Greater love has no-one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”

Good morning my friends, what joy filled my heart this morning as I sat outside watching the sunrise and the sheer beauty and colour in the sky and clouds; Awesome is too little a word for it. Thank you Father for your brilliance!.

Yesterday we had our Remembrance Service in St Luke’s Church. A few of our congregation stayed away, because they think holding a Remembrance Service is like rattling swords and glorifying war. However, I believe we should honour those who’ve been called up to serve their Country. Yes, we must all admit that Politicians can get it wrong, that sometimes we go to war for the most foolish and evil reasons, as the UK did during the Iraq war. The Nation was led to believe that Saddam Hussein was about to use WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction). However, it was just a made-up excuse for what the Americans were calling “Regime Change”… They wanted to get rid of Saddam. In the process so many innocent people lost their lives, the beautiful country of Iraq now lies in ruins, with many hundreds of thousands dead, many more than would have been if Saddam had been allowed to govern and we’d used Diplomacy to bring him in line with the modern civilised world.

So perhaps is not right to glorify war: But there are times when EVIL needs to be fought: The evil of the Nazi Germany for instance, hell-bent on the destruction of the Jewish race and world-wide domination. However, was that the reason that Britain went to war? No! It was because of our treaty with Poland; only later on did the population discover the horrors of the Nazis.

The Beautiful Sky: The red tones of the sunrise reminded me of the crimson red of the poppy and the blood of the Lord Jesus.

John 15:13 “Greater love has no-one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”

But Jesus didn’t just give His LIFE for His friends; He gave it up for His enemies too: for the whole world.

Jesus Died For All His Enemies:

Romans 5:6-11 Why Christ Died: To Reconcile Us To God.
6  You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.
7  Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die.
8  But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
9  Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!
10  For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
11  Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

AMAZING LOVE: oh what sacrifice:

My friends, look at the text above, whilst we were still powerless: i.e. we couldn’t save ourselves from God’s wrath, nothing we could do could remove the stain of sin, we were God’s enemies. Jesus went to war with SIN, gave HIS LIFE, to satisfy God’s righteousness, anger against sin and His holy justice, now we can be reconciled to God through His DEATH, He won the war. The Enemy has been defeated and we can be changed from God’s enemies through His Son’s death to His friends: Reconciled. More than that we can become members of God’s own family. What an amazing and beautiful crimson picture of God’s love.

In Flanders Fields (Poem)

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Don’t think of that poem as keeping war alive or getting revenge for dead comrades, but for our LORD’S SAKE we take up His torch against His enemy SIN.

Imagine, we could all give our life for a friends, but Jesus did it for His most bitter opponents: What LOVE!

We want to put and end to war, true, but let it be the war against sin that rages on until Christ returns. We owe Him a debt of gratitude, so let’s get into our battle armour (Ephesians 6:10-20) and wage the war with our Saviour watching our backs. Let’s SAVE as many souls for Heaven as we can whilst we have the torch in our hands.

REMEMBER: How much Christ loved you; whilst you were still His enemy, Jesus Christ died for you. That’s how much He loved you.

Don.

Remember Jesus Compassion

greater love has no one than this, to lay down his life for his friends

Daily Spirit & Word, 629:

REMEMBER JESUS COMPASSION.

Jesus Has The Power & Authority To; HEAL, TEACH, PREACH, DELIVER & FORGIVE: Because He Is God!

It’s Remembrance Sunday:

Significant: 70 years end of Second World War: 100 Years since the First World War. 2015 Years since the first Universal War: Jesus won that battle: He rose again from the dead.

Today we remember all who have given their lives in service of this country in times of conflict.

It’s always a sad day too, because we must never forget the futility of war.

  • The ones who loose their lives tend to be:
  • The young men with so much potential for life.
  • The young innocent children: who loose parents.
  • The innocent civilians: who get caught up in war.

We, who are Christians must also REMEMBER the ONE who GAVE HIS LIFE.

Not just for a country or for a continent or a group of allied countries, but for the whole world.

Listen to what God is saying to us afresh today:

John 3:13-17 “No-one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man.
14  Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,
15  that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.
16  “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
17  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

SAVE THE WORLD: Through His Son.

We know the feeling of sending a Son off to battle. Our own Son Joe served in Afghanistan, where so many Royal Marines lost their lives. It’s NOT easy to send your son to a place that he may need to give his life. Hard though that is, many countless thousands have done it: Thousands of sons have died. Many more wounded.

The sending of the Son of God, from Heaven to Earth: God had it in mind, not for a few years, but right from the beginning of time. God knew that He’d one day have to pay the ultimate sacrifice: death to save the human race.

TODAY: we’re back into Mark’s Gospel:

Mark 1:29-45     1) Jesus Heals Simon’s Mother-in-Law.
29  As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.
30  Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her.
31  So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
32  That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.
33  The whole town gathered at the door,
34  and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.

Notice: Peter had a Mother-in-law: He was married, when he left everything to follow Jesus.
Many people when they are called to go to war are married and have to leave love-hearts behind.
Many people when they are called to go with Jesus are married too.

Notice: Jesus Compassion: “He took her by the hand and helped her up.”
It reminds me of Psalm 40: When Jesus reaches down from heaven, takes us out of the mud and mire, and gives us a firm place to stand. He grabs us by His Divine Outstretched Hands: Outstretched upon the Cross.

Notice: The Whole Town Were gathering at the Door to see Jesus. He responds again: with compassion healing many different diseases. Driving out Demons. (Jesus had Authority when He came to the Earth)

MARK 1:35-39:   2) Prayer in Solitary Place:

35  Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

36  Simon and his companions went to look for him,
37  and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”
38  Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so that I can preach there also. That is why I have come.”
39  So he travelled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.

NOTICE: Jesus found lonely places to pray: Places where He could be alone with His Father. My friends, every truly Born Again believer will want to spend time alone with their Heavenly Father. It’s where the POWER for your Mission comes from.

NOTICE: Verse 38: Jesus didn’t only come to heal. He didn’t want to ONLY be known as a HEALER. He had a mission from God: To Teach and Preach and Heal. (But Healing was only a way of letting people know who He was: God on Earth).

MARK 1:40-45:   3) Jesus Compassion For Untouchables:

40  A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”
41  Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”
42  Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured.
43  Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning:
44  “See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
45  Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
NOTICE: Jesus Compassion: Jesus reached out and touched the man and said, “I am willing, be clean”
He touched a man with Leprosy. To DELIVER him from separation from society: to acceptance by everyone.

Jesus does the SAME thing for you and me: He’ll deliver you from the DISEASE of SIN: Which keeps you out of Heaven (Even one sin: no liar, no thief, no blasphemer can enter into God’s Kingdom). Jesus came to set you free from sin, to make you acceptable to God. “I AM Willing, be CLEAN”…

Conclusion:

Remember: “Great love has no one than this, to lay his life down for his friends” John 15:13.

Jesus Compassion is still the SAME TODAY.

He has compassion:

To lift us up by His Divine Hand: by His DEATH: We can be SAVED. Because of His LOVE.

To let us know His Healing, Deliverance and Teaching. (His Mission and Battle are NOT over: He Commissioned many more faithful Soldiers to enter the battle for souls; many have given their lives in the cause of Christ, to win souls for Heaven.

To come to us, who are untouchable to God, because of our SIN: Just like the leper: We are unclean, we need God’s Touch before we can be made clean and permitted to enter into Heaven. Jesus Compassion is REVEALED TODAY.

My friends, On this REMEMBRANCE DAY: Let us always REMEMBER and NEVER FORGET: Jesus Compassion.

Let us have the SAME COMPASSION: FOR EVERYONE.

We’re just heard HOW Jesus was God and how that was proved by what He did whilst upon the earth. Jesus and God the Father are ONE.

REMEMBER:

Jesus came into this world, sent by the Father, willing and obedient, even unto death upon the Cross, in order that He would save people from their sins, and deliver them from death and judgement. What a wonderful thing to ponder, to meditate and to dwell upon this Remembrance Sunday.

REMEMBER:

Jesus came into this world to SAVE YOU Too.

Just as He said to the man with Leprosy “I am willing, be clean” He has the same compassion on you too.

So Jesus, when we come to trust in Him and receive Him as Lord is saying the same thing to you individually

“He’ll lift us up and help us to our feet, He’ll teach us, He’ll clean us up for Heaven, He’ll give us the gift of Eternal life, He didn’t come to condemn us, but to give His life to SAVE US” Isn’t that too, a wonderful thing to ponder, to meditate and to dwell upon this Remembrance Sunday?

REMEMBER: NEXT WEEK:

Jesus has the POWER and AUTHORITY to FORGIVE SINS:

He has that power and authority because He is God.

Amen!

Believe The Promises of Jesus Today

Daily Spirit & Word, 628:

BELIEVE THE PROMISES OF JESUS CHRIST.

Good morning my friends, there are many times when sincere followers of Jesus feel low.

What are we to do at these times?

  • When there is no joy in our religious activity?
  • When there is no sense of God’s presence?
  • When the Word of the Lord seems not to be speaking to “Me”?
  • When we feel far away from the Lord?
  • When we want to know the Lord’s comfort, but find none?
  • When we try to pick ourselves up out of the dirt and fail

Listen afresh to what the LORD says concerning this kind of thirsting.

Trust afresh in ALL the Promises of Jesus.

“I will” it’s His PROMISE:

THE LORD PROMISES:

First to Israel: The Lord God Almighty (Jehovah) made many promises to His Chosen People Israel: These are promises: a promise is something that’s bound to happen and they cannot be revoked. Some of the Lord’s promises to Israel are not popular or positive; the promise to judge them and exile them if they turn away from Him. But His eternal promise that they will be His People and He will be their God is until Christ returns in Judgement.

Isaiah 44:1-5
1 “But now listen, O Jacob, my servant, Israel, whom I have chosen.
2  This is what the LORD says— he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you: Do not be afraid, O Jacob, my servant, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.
3  For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.
4  They will spring up like grass in a meadow, like poplar trees by flowing streams.
5  One will say, ‘I belong to the LORD‘; another will call himself by the name of Jacob; still another will write on his hand, ‘The LORD’S’, and will take the name Israel.

What an awesome series of promises from the Lord don’t you think? But now speak the following promises out loud to your thirsty soul.

THE LORD JESUS PROMISES:

These are PROMISES to those who’ve trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for Salvation and taken hold of Him as Saviour.

First: Jesus’ ENCOURAGEMENT TO OVERCOME:

Revelation 3:12-13 “Him who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will he leave it. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on him my new name. 13  He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

WOWzer! What a wonderful promise: Jesus is going to write on you God’s Name and His Own New Name (Don’t know what that is yet do we?). We’ll be in God’s Temple and Never again will we leave it. (The Temple is the Presence of God).

Second: Jesus Christ and His Teachings and Commandments Are Your WISDOM:

Matthew 7:21-25 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22  Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ 23  Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

Are you certain that you are IN CHRIST and that He is IN YOU? You’ll know, because God’s Spirit will let you know that you belong to God.

READ THE GOSPEL:

Watch Hell’s Best Kept Secret:

Third: Jesus Promise of ETERNAL LIFE & ETERNAL SECURITY:

John 10:24-30
24  The Jews gathered round him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.”
25  Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father’s name speak for me,
26  but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.
27  My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
28  I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no-one can snatch them out of my hand.
29  My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no-one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.
30  I and the Father are one.”

WOWzer! Such a beautiful promise of Jesus “no one, nothing can snatch us out of The Lord Jesus’ hand or the Father’s hand.”

Finally: THE PROMISE OF FRESH PASTURE & ABUNDANT LIFE.

John 10:9-11
9  I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture.
10  The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
11  “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

Jesus gave His life so that you could experience ABUNDANT (FULL LIFE).

When the Father draws you by the Holy Spirit to put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, then once you’ve responded in repentance and faith, received the New Birth and become a member of God’s family; it’s forever!

The Importance of Persevering.

Sharing the Good News with people on the streets of London

Daily Spirit & Word, 627: The Importance Of Persevering:

When Witnessing To Professing Believers In Jesus.

2 Corinthians 12:9 “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”

Good morning my friends, it was with great joy we returned from the battle for souls, sharing the Awesome Good News of Jesus on the Streets of West Norwood last night. It is a battle and each encounter leaves you feeling strength has been sapped from you. Our battle is NOT against flesh and blood,  Ephesians 6:11-12 “Put on the full armour of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

But why were we so filled with the joy of the Lord?

Because we won battle after battle last night.

But before we went out, we really took to heart what God’s Word tells us about our need for Jesus and for His strength and power and presence to be in us.  Zechariah 4:6 “… ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.”

Out Of The Darkness: Into The Light:

You know something my friends, sharing Jesus enlightens not only those we share with, but also we ourselves. We come face to face with our motives for witnessing, our heart’s desires and our own shortcomings and limitations. It reminds us afresh just how much we need Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit in everything we attempt for His glory. We go out in His strength and we come back rejoicing. However, if we were to go in our own strength, in the strength of the flesh, we would have returned with our battle banners trailing in the dirt and our armour stained with blood.

We must go out recognizing our own weakness and lack of ability to do anything unless the Lord goes out with us.

Charles Spurgeon said, “He will only reap that corn, the seed of which was sown from heaven, watered by grace, and ripened by the sun of divine love.” From Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening Devotional for 4th November.

Secondly, we were witnesses of what the Lord was doing in the lives of those we shared with. How He had already prepared people’s hearts for the Gospel last night.

The Gospel really does open the eyes of the blind: for many we met last night professed a belief in Jesus almost immediately, but as we continued to witness, through discernment and the gift of the Holy Spirit, we could see quite clearly they’d gotten into ‘religion’ without coming to a true faith and trust in Jesus Christ. So many had attended church, but had stopped short of going the whole way to trust in Jesus for themselves. However, initially, they were so blinded by their own self-assurance that they didn’t seem concerned at all about their own eternal welfare, thankfully the LORD was and He was ready to open their eyes.

As we chatted, we asked this simple question: “Do you think God will allow you into Heaven?” and to some others, “Have you been good enough to get into Heaven?” to which their answers were a resounding “Oh yes!”. When we asked “Why?” We then knew instantly they were not trusting in Jesus for Salvation, but themselves and their own goodness. More than that, they had a standard of goodness that was far below that of the Lord Jesus Christ. Most thought that their own good deeds would far outweigh their bad deeds and that God would look at their whole life and see they were more good than bad. Sadly we could see they had been trusting in a false Gospel, which gave them a false assurance.

It’s a common misconception amongst church going people today, that if they “try their best”, then God will just wave them through into glory in Heaven. How often have we heard on the streets, “I try my best to be good”… Of course we should try our best, but we should never rely or depend upon our own goodness to get into Heaven.

My friends, Satan loves it when people are kept in the darkness about their spiritual condition before a holy and righteous God. Yes God is loving and forgiving, but He’s also just and in His righteousness, He must punish every single sin. Sin has it’s wages and God is so faithful that He must give sin it’s due. If anyone was to appear before Him, trusting in their own goodness, their good works, He would then simply show them their SIN and turn them away from Heaven. (No SINNER can enter into the Kingdom of God).

Helping People SEE their NEED for Jesus:

So Through The Right Use Of God’s LAW: We, with the inward working of the Holy Spirit, bringing the Conscience back to life, in those we witnessed to, we used God’s LAW (Revealed in the Ten Commandments) to show a person their NEED for Jesus.

Romans 3:9-20
9 What shall we conclude then? Are we any better? Not at all! We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin. (We’ve ALL sinned and fallen short of God’s Glory).
10  As it is written: “There is no-one righteous, not even one; (Nobody is good enough in themselves for Heaven).
11  there is no-one who understands, no-one who seeks God. (We can only come to God if He pulls us to Himself).
12  All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no-one who does good, not even one.” (Even the best things that we do are tainted by some kinds of selfish motives).
13  “Their throats are open graves; their tongues practise deceit.” “The poison of vipers is on their lips.”
14  “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”
15  “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16  ruin and misery mark their ways,
17  and the way of peace they do not know.”
18  “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
19  Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. (those who are “under the law” are anybody who is yet to trust in Jesus Christ).
20  Therefore no-one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.

It’s through the LAW of God: The Ten Commandments, that we become CONSCIOUS of our SIN.

i.e. Our Conscience comes back to life again and we can see sin for what it is: rebellion against God.

Let’s just look and see if that’s true?

  • What do you call a person who commits murder? “A Murderer”. How many murders do they need to commit in their lifetime to become a murderer? Just ONE. It’s the same with every other Commandment of God.
  • If we’ve told just one lie in our life, then we’re liars in God’s sight. He’s declared, “No liar can enter into the Kingdom of God”.
  • If we’ve stolen something, no matter what it’s value in the eyes of the world or who we’ve stolen it from, just one act of stealing makes us into a thief. God has declared, “No thief can enter into the Kingdom of God”…
  • Just one act of disobedience by Adam and Eve brought God’s curse of DEATH upon the whole human race and banishment from the Garden of Eden forever.
  • That’s just a few of the commandments: God sees the sin of lust as adultery. Saying “OMG” as Blasphemy. And we all know that no adulterer or blasphemer can enter into God’s Kingdom don’t we?

Every truly born again believer knows that in and of themselves, they are not good enough for Heaven and never will be or can be. Why? Because a converted and Holy Spirit filled person knows that even ONE SIN will keep a person out of Heaven for all eternity. We know that to enter the Kingdom of God we must be cleansed from all sin and made pure, holy and righteous by Jesus. No amount of “trying our best” can remove past sins.

Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”

It’s like getting a Tattoo: it’s the indelible ink-stain of sin that cannot be removed by human actions.

Most People: (Who don’t know the LORD) Initially object that this is too black and white. They state, my god is not like that. I believe in a god that forgives sins. (So do we, but there is only ONE WAY that those sins can be forgiven, and it’s NOT by trying harder to be good enough).

However, what they are actually doing is putting their faith in a god of their own making, the Bible calls that idolatry. It breaks the second of God’s Commandments “Not to make an Idol and bow down to it”. Their idol is a god that just winks at sin like an unjust earthly judge who can be bribed. No my friends, God is much more Holy than everybody realises. The God who inspired Holy Scripture said, “NO SINNER CAN ENTER INTO GOD’S KINGDOM” He cannot wink at sin and just allow people into Heaven with sin still upon their souls. God’s punishment for sin is banishment from Heaven to a place that He’s reserved for the Devil and his Demons.

The Good News:

Thankfully, once a person is fully aware of their spiritual condition, they are in the right place then to receive the Good News of Jesus Christ.

It’s not true, that everyone is aware of how much they’ve sinned. We know that from weekly experience of sharing the Gospel on the streets in London. In fact nearly everyone we meet thinks that deep down they are ‘good enough’ for heaven. It’s only when we take the time with them to gently show them God’s standards of holiness through His Commandments. Those Commands really are like a Schoolmaster who teaches us our need for Jesus cleansing and forgiveness.

Galatians 3:24 (KJV) Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.”

They are then ready for the Good News of Jesus: That God doesn’t want to punish anyone, but that everyone might be saved by Jesus Christ. It’s why Jesus came into the world: God wants everyone to come to REPENTANCE.

1 Timothy 1:15 “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.”

HOW DOES JESUS SAVE SINNERS?

Jesus took the place of every sinner upon the cross. He died in our place. His death sets us free from God’s wrath and anger against sin.

Romans 5:8-9 (Two of my favourite verses in the Bible).
8  But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
9  Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!

Jesus can save anyone from their sins and deliver them from God’s wrath and anger against sin.

But we must do something to be SET FREE from God’s wrath against our sins.

We must TRUST in Christ’s Death & Turn to Him in Repentance and Faith to Receive Him as Lord.

It like coming to this understanding: “Father God, I know now that I’ve broken Your Commandments and I’ve sinned against You, I’m a sinner in Your sight and deserve Your just punishment for my rebellion. I also know that Jesus Christ, Your One and Only Son, died in my place upon the Cross. I now turn to You Lord Jesus and ask for your forgiveness. I confess my sins to You Lord (Name them) and I turn away from all sin in my life (repentance). I receive You Lord Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. Please Lord, come into my life and give me the promised New Life. Let me be born again by Your Holy Spirit and become a child of God so that I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that He is my Heavenly Father. Amen”

A person must see and understand: (Even a ‘churchgoing’ or ‘religious’ person).

  • A) That they’ve sinned against God.
    B) That they need His forgiveness to enter into Heaven.
    C) No amount of ‘good’ works or deeds can bring that forgiveness.
    D) That Jesus Christ has died upon the Cross in their place, taking their punishment and paying the price of sin.
    E) That they need to turn to Jesus in repentance and faith and receive Him as Lord.
    F) When they do all that, then God will grant them New Life in Christ, New Birth of the Holy Spirit and Eternal Life.
    G) They’ll also be members of God’s Family forever. He will be their Heavenly Father. They will be His children. Saints forever.
    H) Begin to live the new life in Christ: Pray, Worship, Read God’s Word, Gather with Brothers and Sisters in Christ. Share the Good News of Jesus Christ with others who don’t yet know Him as Lord.
    I) The Holy Spirit: Also will give them Heavenly gifts to enable them to serve God as He directs them.

A Christian is SET FREE from Sin:

Romans 6:22 “But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.”

When you are set free from sin’s ability to control your life, you are set free in Jesus to be like Him: Holy, and this leads to an assurance that you have received the gift of eternal life.

A Christian is DEAD to SIN:

Romans 6:2 “By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?”

Conclusion:

Last night was so awesome, no wonder we returned with banners flying high (not literally), but full of the JOY of the LORD.

We met a man and a woman last night, who I initially thought were father and daughter, but they’d just, at that moment, met each other after not seeing each other for over 20 years. It was amazing! The woman and man were so thankful after our conversation about the Lord.

She had been trusting in her own way to Heaven. He was a lapsed Roman Catholic who never attended church, but believed he was going to Heaven because he’d been baptised as a baby. We took the time to go through the Commandments with them and what an amazing, eye opening time it was. They both could see and understand their need for Jesus Christ. The woman even after that said, “I’ve got my own beliefs and I’m going to try my best in my own way”. Sherrie said to her “Can I just say something, I want to say this gently and respectfully, but you are trusting in your own way instead of God’s way.” She simply nodded in agreement. She responded, “I don’t think that our meeting up tonight was an accident” and continued to explain they’d not seen each other for over 20 years and how she knew she’d never be able to forget what God had just spoken to her. With warm handshakes they both thanked us so much for taking the time to stop and talk with them about the Lord. Awesome!

Share the Good News, go out in your weakness and He will fill you with His strength and you will return with banners flying high. Who knows, you may even reap some of the seeds that have been sown in their hearts by the Divine hand of Glory.

Don.

BTW: In the past when someone said, “I’m a believer” I would just say, “Praise the Lord”. Now, sometimes, the Lord prompts me to just check to see who it is they are actually trusting in; Jesus or themselves for their Salvation. More often than not these days, the LORD opens up the can of worms, empties them out and fills them with His own LOVE. Because there is ONLY ONE WAY to get into Heaven and that’s through what Jesus Christ has done to make us pure and ready for it.

BTW: Every truly born again believer will not be annoyed that you want to check they are trusting in Jesus, they’ll thank you for it, pray for you and encourage you on your way. Don’t forget to encourage them too, to share Jesus regularly.

Wisdom: Learning from Children.

Wisdom: from children and infants

Daily Spirit & Word, 626: Wisdom: Learning from Children.

“From the lips of infants and children, You have ordained praise…” Psalm 8:2.

Good morning my friends, at Discipleship Fellowship last night we were thinking about wimpy prayer, praise and worship. The Lord certainly was with us last night and our prayer, praise and worship was awesome! Genuinely giving thanks to the Lord and singing about what He’s like moves us from the outer gates into the inner courts of excited praise. (Psalm 100).

As we gathered we sang one of the famous children’s praise songs; “If I were a butterfly” … but it leads into praising the Lord for how He’s made us.

Chorus: (from ‘If I were a butterfly’).
For You gave me a heart,
and You gave me a smile,
You gave me Jesus,
and You made me Your child,
I just thank you Father for making me, me.

Here then are some pearls of WISDOM from children:

1) No matter how hard you try, you can’t baptize cats.
2) When your Mom is mad at your Dad, don’t let her brush your hair.
3) If your school-friend hits you, don’t hit back: They always catch the second person.
4) Never ask your 3-year old brother to hold a tomato.
5) You can’t trust dogs to watch your food.
6) Don’t sneeze when someone is cutting your hair.
8) You can’t hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk.
9)The best place to be when you’re sad is Grandpa’s lap.

Wisdom: From the lips of children.

As Jesus was teaching in the Temple in Jerusalem: Some children began to praise Him and sing about Jesus, but the RELIGIOUS Authorities didn’t like what the children were saying about Jesus.

Matthew 21:12-17 Jesus clears the temple, heals and listens to Children’s praise.
12 Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money-changers and the benches of those selling doves.
13  “It is written,” he said to them, ” ‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it a ‘den of robbers’.”
14  The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them.
15  But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple area, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant.
16  “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, ” ‘From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise’?”
17  And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where he spent the night.

Who is it that should have been praising the Lord?

  • That’s right, the Religious Leaders and people.
  • Who was it that actually praise the Lord that day?
    • The blind and lame people who came to Him.
    • The blind and lame were healed.
    • the children shouting in the Temple area
    • they Worshipped Jesus: “Hosanna to the Son of David”…

Jesus said, “From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise

He was actually quoting Psalm 8:2. Perhaps that portion of the Psalm was prophetic?

How is your Praise and Worship this morning?
Are you coming to Jesus?

Just as the children responded from their hearts, giving genuine praise, honour and thanks, the followers of Jesus Christ will also be thankful on purpose, moved in our hearts to praise Him. If you are not ready to do this right now, then KNOW (Wisdom) something in your walk with Jesus may need to be put right. Come to Him now in a time of prayer, giving genuine thanks for all the great things He’s done for you. Remember how Jesus shed His innocent blood to get you clean before God? Remember those answered prayers. Thank God for His provision of the Creation. There’s Always something to be thankful for.

Prayer: Father in Heaven, I thank You that from the lips of children we can learn so much wisdom, both in the past and today. Help us to have a heart that’s ready to praise You: for what You’ve done and for Who You are. Help us Lord Jesus to be just like those who came to you that day, with hearts ready to give You praise, honour and all the glory. Amen!

Be blessed today my friends, stay ever closer to Jesus.
Don.

Psalm 8:1-9 Creator God: Worthy of Worship.
1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
2  From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.
3  When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
4  what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?
5  You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honour.
6  You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet:
7  all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field,
8  the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
9  O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Prayer That Moves Mountains

Strong in prayer, faith, belief and not doubting,

Daily Spirit & Word, 624: Stop Your Wimpy Praying.

Prayer That Moves Mountains

Good morning my friends, at our worship team meeting on Friday, one of the group, during prayer, said, “Lord, forgive our wimpy praying”… Prayer that lacks power. Prayer that has no legs in it. Prayer that doesn’t expect answers. “Oh Lord, forgive our wimpy prayers”.

Thankfully, the Word of God has a lot to say about prayer and how to ensure our prayers are answered.

Matthew 21:22 “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

What does that verse above tell us?

  • That we can get anything we want? No!
  • That God is like a genie in the lamp, that we can rub and get all our wishes to come true? No!

Just like all the great memory verses in God’s Word, we must look at this verse in it’s context to understand what our Lord Jesus was saying.

Why is context important? Because, someone who prays, believing that he or she will get an answer to that prayer, and doesn’t get what he or she wants is going to be bitterly disappointed and may give up on prayer or the Lord very quickly.

Matthew 21:18-22
18 Early in the morning, as he (Jesus) was on his way back to the city, he was hungry.
19  Seeing a fig-tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered.
20  When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. “How did the fig-tree wither so quickly?” they asked.
21  Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig-tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done.
22  If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

Jesus was hungry: He expected to be fed by a fig tree. He said to it (as if it had ears or a mind and will to understand) “May you never bear fruit again!” That fig tree withered instantly.

Then Jesus explained about faith and answered prayer: “If you have faith and don’t doubt and if you believe; then you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer”… The keys to answered prayer: faith, belief and not doubting.

Remember what Jesus said to Thomas? “Stop doubting and believe” (John 20:27)… After Jesus rose from the dead he appeared first to all the disciples apart from Thomas. Church historians record that Thomas went on to become the Apostle who travelled to India and established one of the oldest and longest surviving groups of Christians in the world. He obviously did stop doubting and believed.

The Cursing of the Fig Tree:

Why did Jesus curse the fig tree?

Most Bible commentators believe that this cursing of the fig tree is symbolic. I do believe that too, because the evidence from Scripture is compelling; the Fig Tree is Symbolic of the Nation of Israel.

When did Jesus curse the fig tree?

It happened a week before Passover, and was during the last few days of Jesus’ life. It was very early in the season for figs, but because figs grow before the leaves come, Jesus would have expected to find some figs on the tree. In the UK we normally only get one crop of figs, but in the right climate and growing conditions, people who grow figs can get three crops in a whole year from fig trees. When Jesus saw the leaves on the tree He expected to find fruit too.

What was happening around the time Jesus cursed the fig tree?

When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, the people wanted to make Him King, but Jesus went to the Temple: What did He find there? Instead of pure religion it was a joke. People were buying and selling in the Temple. He got angry and turned over the tables and made a whip to drive people out of God’s House.

When he arrived he expected to find: PURE RELIGION: (to eat fruit from the fig tree).

  • The Fig Tree: Looked Good: (Had green leaves).
  • The Temple: Looked Good, had all the trappings of religion; Sacrifices, Robes, Magnificent Building.

However, just like the fig tree, the Temple was BARREN: Dead religion, faithless religiosity. Faithless religion is just as bad as pagan witchcraft. People performed their religious chants, followed religiously their duties, said the right prayers, thinking that because of the words and the way they are performed God is obliged to do their bidding. It’s just EMPTY and FAITHLESS religiosity. It was never meant to be what was said or how it was performed, pure religion was always meant to come for a heart that really wants to please God and from a people who wanted to live with God and in accordance with His will.

The Cursed Fig Tree: is a WARNING:

Not just to Israel, but to every follower of Jesus today: He’s looking for you to bear fruit in your daily walk with Him.

If you are not being fruitful, then your faith is as good a dead.

Repent or Perish:  Luke 13:1-9 (Repent or Perish).
1 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
2  Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way?
3  I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.
4  Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem?
5  I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”
6  Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig-tree, planted in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any. 7  So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig-tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’
8  ” ‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig round it and fertilise it. 9  If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’ “

Matthew 3:7-12 Produce The Fruit Of True Repentance.
7  But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptising, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
8  Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.
9  And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
10  The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
11  “I baptise you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
12  His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing-floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

Without FAITH it is impossible to please God.

How to get this ‘mountain moving’ faith.

Hebrews 11:6 “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

Hebrews 11 is the great chapter on FAITH: It tells us about the faith of; Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Rahab (the Prostitute).

The writer of Hebrews then goes onto explain: How he didn’t have the time to write about all the others who demonstrated great faith (but we have their stories in the Bible too).  Hebrews 11:32-34 “And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets, 33  who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, 34  quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.”

Answered Prayer: We Must BELIEVE and KNOW that God REWARDS those who earnestly seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6).

Without FAITH it is impossible to please God.

What was Jesus doing when He cursed the fig tree?

He was showing God’s displeasure when there is a lack of real FAITH in Israel. That Israel would one day be crushed (It was a few years later when Jerusalem was sacked by the Romans).

However, True faith will result in a fruitful life.

For the follower of Jesus we will be bearing much fruit in our daily walk with the Lord.

  • He’s looking for you to be fruitful.
  • He’s expecting you to be fruitful.
  • He wants you to be fruitful.

The fruit of the Holy Spirit is; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

How’s your fruit doing?

If you are like me, like an ordinary human being, you’ll readily admit that there are areas in your life that you need to be more fruitful; more loving, kind, generous, faithful etc… Except if you are a Christian, then you are NOT like an ordinary human being, because you’ve got the Holy Spirit living within you. You’ve got the POWER of God in your soul. Your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit (the dwelling place of God). Jesus is in you. Father God is in you. Heaven is in your heart. You are a member of God’s Kingdom Family. You are a Royal child of God. Heir to the Kingdom. Now, how’s your faith?

If Jesus was to walk up to you today, as He did that good looking fig tree, full of the promise of fruit, would He find FAITH alive and well within your soul?

If you don’t doubt, or stop doubting and believe; you can do anything as a follower of Jesus.

If you have faith, no mountain will be able to stand in your way.

How do we get more faith?

It comes by exercising the faith we’ve already got.

It’s the same as the muscles in your body, if you don’t do any exercise your muscles will deteriorate, you’ll get weaker and your bones will not stay together very well. Strong muscles are good for your whole body. Faith in every area of the Christian life needs to be exercised:

  • To be stronger: We need to practice the walk: Give generously; to people and especially to God. This shows we’re not trusting in money, but in God. We showing God and the world that we LOVE God more than money by giving it away generously. Once you start to give generously, your faith in the Lord will grow much stronger.
  • To be stronger: We need to practice the walk: BE MORE LOVING: Love the people God brings into your daily life. Be kind in the way that you talk to everybody. Being loving and kind is costly, but when you do it with determination and seeking God’s help and power to be more loving, then you’ll get much stronger in your faith and walk with Jesus.
  • To be stronger: We need to practice the walk: Stop gossiping and back-stabbing, work hard for your boss, share the Gospel as much as you can, give generously, go out of your way to help other people, speak up for the weak, those in need, the poor.

When you PRACTICE the FAITH you’ve already received, then your faith will grow much stronger day by day. You’ll learn to TRUST God more and you’ll expect much more to be done as your prayer life gets more sincere and expectant. As your intimacy with Father God grows ever closer, you’ll experience what divine dependency is like. You’ll bear MUCH fruit. God LOVES to give even more than you do. He’s longing to answer ALL your prayers, but you’ll never get a single prayer answered without FAITH and BELIEF. To stop your doubting, start living the way He’s revealed, empowered and called you to live. Be filled afresh today with God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (John 17:26).

If you are praying for something and not seeing any answers yet, start living the way He’s revealed in the Bible. Be the person that Jesus saved you to be: Full of faith and faithful to Him.

PRAYER: “Oh LORD, forgive our wimpy prayers, strengthen our faith, help us to bear fruit in our lives and our walk with You. Enable us by Your Holy Spirit to walk with You today Lord. Help us to see with Your eyes the potential for good all around us. Lord give us the ability to make the most of all the opportunities You are giving us today. Amen!”

Most probably, the first MOUNTAIN that you’ll see thrown into the sea is your wimpy prayers. Be strong in the LORD.

I’m hoping and praying that you’ll be closer to Jesus this week than last.

Don.
