Daily Spirit & Word, 623: Joyful Worship.
“Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
Good morning my friends, I had an amazing day-off work yesterday with the grandchildren, sometimes it’s Papa’s only function but to be the Horse. Have you ever had three kids all trying to get onto your back at the same time? In the evening we welcomed our Worship Team for a meeting here at the Vicarage. What an amazing and dedicated group of folks we have, they all love the Lord and want to serve Him with their gifts.
We chatted about our Worship, our struggles, our joys, our dreams for what great worship will, could and can be. Everyone shared what it was that made worship connect with the Lord for them. Also what puts them off. Some loved the old time hymns others modern contemporary worship songs and styles. Some felt the ancient hymns had impenetrable language, which is a barrier to understanding for people today.
Everyone wanted to see more people involved in our worship, especially the young folks in the church. We all want to encourage those who can sing or play an instrument to use those gifts in serving Jesus.
- I’ve been thinking about WORSHIP in Church for some time.
- I’ve been praying for MORE: Worshippers who LOVE the Lord with all their heart.
- I’ve been praying for MORE: Worship that makes everyone FEEL they’ve connected and been in the presence of Jesus.
- I’ve been praying for MORE: Worship that brings the Lord’s touch in our lives.
17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord,
Note: Verse 17. The wise and foolish.
- The Wise Person: Understands what the Lord’s will is.
- The Foolish Person: Doesn’t Understand the Lord’s will.
When you see a ‘therefore‘ in the Bible, you need to ask yourself, “What is that therefore there for?” 🙂 🙄
To really understand these verses we need to read them in context and go back to find the meaning of the ‘therefore’.
Back in verse 14 of this chapter we read; Ephesians 5:14 “for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
Ushering IN the LIGHT: Worship that Ignites.
THE SLEEPING PERSON:
Light awakens the sleeping: Shine a torch in someone’s eyes when they’re asleep and they’ll soon be awake. That’s often how we were woken-up for our turn on Watch in the Navy. The person would shine a torch in your eyes and wake you up instantly.
My friends, who are those who are spiritually dead? Most people in the world are as sleeping men when it comes to walking in the light of God. They are living in the darkness of spiritual sleep and spiritual death. However, we must also NOTE that this letter was written to BELIEVERS in Jesus. Far too often our brothers and sisters in Christ are living like the people in the world that don’t know the Lord, they are living and walking in the darkness. They need the LIGHT of Christ to shine afresh into their lives again. Worship does that! Worship that ushers in the LIGHT is what we all need.
When we gather together and WORSHIP the LORD: According to HIS Will, then the LIGHT of Christ will shine upon us. Awesome!
So the instructions in verses 17 to 19 suddenly makes sense. We’re to be WISE knowing the LORD’S will. Not doing what the world does, but being filled afresh with Holy Spirit of God. But it also tells us HOW that will happen, HOW we will get the LORD’S Will into our lives and let the light shine in our darkness. “Speak to one another with psalms (spiritual poetry), hymns (songs with theological / teaching content about God, Jesus, Holy Spirit) and Spiritual Songs: those songs that express our love and devotion for the Lord and respond to His touch in our lives. “He loves me, Oh he loves me, and now I know” ….
When we’re worshipping the DARKNESS is replaced by LIGHT.
It’s Halloween tomorrow night, a night of deepest darkness, when the people of the world who don’t know the Lord celebrate all the darkest things in human nature; death, creepy creatures, tricks and treats. Dressing up as ghosts, ghoulish and demons. Witches and warlocks etc… They don’t really know what they are doing, they are blind, dead (spiritually). So brothers, how can we lead ourselves and others into the LIGHT of Jesus Christ? WORSHIP together, then the LIGHT will come.
CHRIST WILL SHINE ON YOU.
So, brothers and sisters, let’s NOT be drunk of wine or strong drink, but lets get FILLED UP with the Holy Spirit of God.
Being filled with the Holy Spirit was not meant to be a ONE-OFF experience for the believer, but an ongoing, daily receiving of Holy Spirit.
Jesus tells us that it’s God the Father’s will to give you the Holy Spirit.
Luke 11:13 Asking for the Holy Spirit. “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
HOW DO we get filled with the HOLY SPIRIT?
For believers it’s Worship: Look with me at the Book of Acts: They ASKED to be Filled.
Acts 4:23-31 Prayer and Praise Ushers in a Move of God and Filling with the Holy Spirit Again.
23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.
24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: ” ‘Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 26 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One.’ 27 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.
28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.
29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.
30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
They asked, Father God Responded:
He gives the Holy Spirit Today!
NOTE: These people who were filled with the Holy Spirit, had already experienced the filling of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. It was NEVER meant to be a one-off experience my friends, but an ongoing reality for every believer. We will be filled, God wants to fill us and set us on fire with His Holy Anointing of the Holy Spirit. Worship Him right now, seeking this new filling of the Holy Spirit, cry out as the disciples did above and ask for it, He’ll give you the Holy Spirit my friends.
BE FILLED: Go on being filled.
That’s what this verse in Ephesians 5:18 really means in the Greek language; “go on being filled”…
I’m looking forward to worship together with all our brothers and sisters in the Lord Jesus on Sunday. Tomorrow we’re gathering together to watch a ‘good’ movie “God’s NOT Dead”. Being together in Fellowship is fantastic!
Pray for my worship team; they need every encouragement we can give them, because they sing and play and lead us all in our singing. Pray that each one of us will be FILLED AFRESH with Holy Spirit and ANOINTED for worship, preaching, teaching, and everything else the LORD wants us to do when we gather together.
But it’s not just for them, each and every believer needs an awareness that we ALL NEED Holy Spirit daily.
Have you been filled with the Holy Spirit today?
Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord.
The LIGHT of Christ will then come.
P.S. Last night we read Psalm 100:
For those of us with Jesus, we don’t have a temple, our bodies are the Temple of the Holy Spirit. We can approach the Holy of Holies in the same way though.
Psalm 100:1-5 A Psalm for Giving Thanks.
1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.
3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.
5 For the LORD is good and his love endures for ever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.
Enter into His Presence with: Thanksgiving.
Enter into His Courts (Closer) with PRAISE.
The LIGHT of Christ will shine on your.
