The Gifts of WISDOM and KNOWLEDGE

Getting the Gifts of the holy Spirit of God

Daily Spirit & Word: 546: The Gifts of Wisdom and Knowledge.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit #2. Wisdom & Knowledge.

1 Corinthians 12:8 “To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,”

After wetting your appetite and hopefully increasing your hunger for more of God’s Spirit in your life, we’re now going to be delving into God’s Word, to see what He has to say about the various gifts. This calls for a much deeper study, to systematically look-out, dig-in and search for the various ways that the Lord has gifted and anointed people in the past and how He longs to give the same gifts of the Holy Spirit for believer and followers of Jesus Christ today.

The first two gifts mentioned in Paul’s list: Wisdom and Knowledge. You’ll notice that He’s listed them together, and in fact if you take the time to study God’s Word, you’ll notice that they are often given to an individual simultaneously (as the same time). WOWzer! When you get God’s gift of Wisdom, you’ll also get Knowledge.

But notice what God has said through Paul: To one there is given wisdom, to another knowledge. It seems there are going to be degrees of these gifts; so one person will be given WISDOM which will of course be accompanied by a degree of knowledge, but another person, will be given KNOWLEDGE to an even greater degree.

Let’s look into God’s Word to see how these Gifts of the Holy Spirit have been used in the past:

Wisdom Is GIVEN:

1 Corinthians 1:5 — For in him you have been enriched in every way—in all your speaking and in all your knowledge—

1 Corinthians 1:30 — It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.

1 Corinthians 2:6-10 — We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7 No, we speak of God’s secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 However, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him”— 10 but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.

1 Corinthians 13:2 — If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

1 Corinthians 13:8 — Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

Genesis 41:38 — So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?”

Genesis 41:39 — Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no-one so discerning and wise as you.

Exodus 31:3 — and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts—

1 Kings 3:5-12 — At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” 6 Solomon answered, “You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day. 7 “Now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. 8 Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. 9 So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” 10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. 11 So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, 12 I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.

Nehemiah 9:20 — You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst.

Job 32:8 — But it is the spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty, that gives him understanding.

Psalms 143:10 — Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

Proverbs 2:6 — For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Isaiah 11:2 — The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD—

Isaiah 11:3 — and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears;

Isaiah 50:4 — The Sovereign LORD has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.

Isaiah 59:21 — “As for me, this is my covenant with them,” says the LORD. “My Spirit, who is on you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth, or from the mouths of your children, or from the mouths of their descendants from this time on and for ever,” says the LORD.

Daniel 2:21 — He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.

Matthew 13:11 — He replied, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.

Acts 6:3 — Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them

2 Corinthians 8:7 — But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us —see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

Ephesians 1:17 — I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

Ephesians 1:18 — I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.

NOW: I’m going to ask you to do something: MEDITATE: Stop and think and dwell upon these verses and portions of the Bible. Read them slowly, let the words sink in and ask the LORD for the Spiritual Gifts of both: Wisdom and Knowledge. Yes, the Holy Spirit will choose which ‘special’ gifts you are going to receive, but God loves and longs to give us so much more than we can even imagine, but we do need to be asking. As you meditate and study these verses you’re going to notice some amazing truths. Remember it’s by KNOWING the TRUTH that we are being set free. You’ll be given tremendous insight by God the Holy Spirit if you do this deep, meditation. Read these verses out loud, write them out by hand, pray them in to your heart, read them in context and then: wait upon the LORD.

TWO THINGS WILL HAPPEN:

As you dwell, study, meditate and pray; two things a definitely going to happen in your life: Your mind is going to be renewed (you’ll get WISDOM) and your life is going to be transformed (You’ll get KNOWLEDGE). Why? Because we serve an awesome, fearful and wonderful God. His Word is living and active and will penetrate. We need to put our roots down deep, much deeper than ever before into God’s Word.

Enjoy your deeper delving into God’s Word: Please feel free to share with others what you have learned from this exercise.

Have and awesome day with Jesus.

Spiritual Gifts: The Most Excellent Way

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Daily Spirit & Word: 545: The Most Excellent Way.

Spiritual Gifts: Discovering My S H A P E.

1 Corinthians 12:7  “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”

Introduction:

Good morning my friends. When you became a Christian (If you are a Christian), God gave you the great gifts of Salvation and the wonderful sure and certain HOPE of Eternity in Heaven in your heart. You became a member of God’s Family with brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus. He also gave you a deeper sense of purpose for life and made you feel significant (important to Him) in your life now. He has also given each one of us the opportunity to serve (Minister to) others and make a real difference in someone else’s life and in this world for Jesus. When you serve others in Jesus’ name, that’s called MINISTRY.

God didn’t design ‘MINISTRY’ for just a few with THEOLOGICAL COLLEGE DEGREES. In St Luke’s Church and most mainline Evangelical, Charismatic, Baptist and Pentecostal Churches, we all believe that EVERY MEMBER of our church is a MINISTER, with a ministry for the LORD first, and secondly towards others.

Hold Up A Mirror:

Do you want to know what a priest looks like? A Minister of Jesus Christ, then just hold up a little mirror and take a look at the face that’s looking back at you and think: “That’s A Minister of Jesus Christ”…

This Every Member Ministry is what today’s TEACHING is all about. During this session of Spirit & Word, you will discover how God can use your; S. H. A. P. E. for His glory.

  • S: SPIRITUAL GIFTS: Special Spiritual Gifts, to build up the body of Christ.
  • H: HEART: Your Heart (passions: what areas of ministry you are passionate about),
  • A: ABILITIES: your Abilities: What unique abilities do you have that would enable you to serve Jesus and His body?
  • P: PERSONALITY: Personality: What kind of a person are you? e.b. timid, outgoing, extrovert,  exuberant, etc…
  • E: EXPERIENCES: Experiences to minister to others in need. What you’ve been through in life.

This is ALL ABOUT DISCOVERING YOUR S.H.A.P.E for the MINISTRY Christ has called and gifted you for.

Why are we looking at this SHAPE stuff?

Because as part of our VISION WEEK: Seeking the LORD for His Vision for St Luke’s Church: We discovered that He wants to enable us to continue what we’re doing here in St Luke’s, but to do what we are doing better. It’s a bit like going back to basics. We followed through with this idea and felt for everyone to be able to know how to SERVE Jesus better, we first needed to know what our GIFTS from the Holy Spirit were. But it’s not just about SPIRITUAL gifts; because each individual has a unique role to play in the family of God. We’re all made up in different ways and the LORD uses that fact to get a much more rounded ministry. We felt every member should know themselves better, in order to be able to serve the LORD.

SPIRITUAL GIFTS:

Today we’re going to focus upon the first part of S.H.A.P.E: SPIRITUAL GIFTS:

But there will be ample opportunity to discover the rest as well.

Bible FOCUS:

1 Corinthians 12:1-31 (NIV)
1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. 2  You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3  Therefore I tell you that no-one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no-one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. 4  There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5  There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6  There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. 7  Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8  To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9  to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10  to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11  All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

12 The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. 13  For we were all baptised by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14  Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15  If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 16  And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 17  If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18  But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19  If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20  As it is, there are many parts, but one body. 21  The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22  On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23  and the parts that we think are less honourable we treat with special honour. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24  while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honour to the parts that lacked it, 25  so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26  If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it. 27  Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28  And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. 29  Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30  Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31  But (you) eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way.

NOTE: We must, when reading Paul’s letter to the Corinthian church, remember that it is a LETTER. Paul was writing for many different purposes, but mainly in this letter to encourage, instruct and correct the church in Corinth, because it was not living the Christian life in a way that was honouring to the LORD or a healthy witness in the world. Sometimes we take chunks of this letter and read them in isolation, however it’s important to bear in mind the whole thrust of the letter. 1 Corinthians 12 is linked to chaper 11 and 13 and 14 and 15… So we need to just glance back (if we’ve read it before) or READ it ALL (if you’ve never read it at all).

The MOST EXCELLENT WAY:

of operating in the GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS (1 Corinthians 13).

At the end of chapter 12 Paul tells the Corinthian Christians, “You are seeking the greatest gifts (prophesy, healing, miracles etc), but now I’m going to show you the most excellent way, then he proceeds to write chapter 13. We’d do well to remember that LOVE is the most excellent gift of all. But we also NEED every other gift to build up a strong church.

God’s GIFT PEOPLE & Purpose in giving them: To build up the church:

Ephesians 4:11-16 11  It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12  to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up
13  until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fulness of Christ.
14  Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.
15  Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.
16  From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

God’s Holy Spirit GIFTS are given to build you up into Christ’s body.

So that you can:

  • Be UNITED (where brothers and sisters dwell together in unity, there the LORD commands His blessings),
  • KNOWLEDGEABLE (about Christ) and
  • BE MATURE: = A mature Christian, follows the teachings of Jesus and realises that to stand any test or storm they need to be fully relying upon the Lord.
  • FULLNESS: Heading towards the fullness of Christ (becoming more Christ like every day of our Spiritual lives).

“The Holy Spirit displays God’s power (Manifestation of the Spirit) through each of us as a means of helping the entire church.” 1 Cor. 12:7 (LB)

A Spiritual Gift: Is a special supernatural ability, which is given by the Holy Spirit to every believer at their conversion, to be used to minister to others, and therefore extend and deepen the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ on earth. However, there are some things that are of vital importance to know about your special Holy Spirit gifts.

In Church yesterday, we gave everyone time to read the Bible and fill in the blanks. Then we talked through the answers.

PRINCIPLES TO PONDER REGARDING SPIRITUAL GIFTS:

  1. Only _____________ have spiritual gifts. 1 Cor. 2:14
  2. Every Christian has at least _______________ gift. 1 Cor. 7:7
  3. The ________________ decides what gifts I get. 1 Cor. 12:11
  4. No one receives __________________ the gifts. 1 Cor. 12:27-30
  5. No single gift is given to __________________. 1 Cor. 12:29-30
  6. You can’t _________________ a spiritual gift. Eph. 4:7
  7. The gifts I’m given are __________________. Rom. 11:29
  8. I am to __________________ the gifts God gives me. 1 Tim. 4:14

(they are given in seed form; they are like muscles)

  1. It’s a sin ___________________ the gift God gave me. 1 Cor. 4:1-2 & Matt. 25:14-30
  1. Using my gifts ___________ God. John 15:8

NOTE: What do you think about the following statement?

“It’s easier to discover your Ministry and Spiritual Gifts through ministry involvement rather than discovering your gifts through ‘gift investigation'”

For many in church today, they’ll do a course or follow a series of teachings on the ‘Spiritual Gifts’, some will go as far as discovering what their own gifts are, but few, very few, followers of Jesus today will take the opportunity to use their gifts. Some churches don’t even encourage their members to exercise their gifts, so the church doesn’t grow strong ‘Spiritually’ and therefore doesn’t progress towards the fullness of Christ.

I said yesterday, holding a piece of paper with their blanks filled in, “wave your paper like this” demonstrating how we get a fire going by fanning the flames, then I explained; “We all need to fan the gifts of the Holy Spirit into a blazing fire that will burn brightly for everyone to see and glorify God”.

Using Your Gifts:

The Manifestation of the Spirit: is given for the common good so;

In the WORKPLACE: A woman in our fellowship felt guided by the Lord to begin a prayer meeting at work and invited some of her colleges to come and pray, they did so. Then one day she turned up for work and got filled with a crippling fear, and instead of going to the prayer meeting, she just got her Bible and began to pray in a quiet room on her own. Then one of her colleagues came and found her and said, “Ah there you are, we’re waiting for you to come and to start the prayer meeting”. The LORD was moving, her Spirit was willing, but her flesh was weak. She said, “I felt a bit like Jonah, running away from the Lord’s calling, but He wouldn’t let me go”…. My friends, your flesh will want to run and hide the light that’s been given to you, to run away from the calling of the Lord. That’s natural, that’s just the flesh and the devil loves it when we get too fearful to do what we’ve been asked by the Lord. How often do we shirk the responsibility and miss God’s golden opportunities, but God’s doesn’t give you gift to sit idle or to hide them;

Matthew 5:15-16  “Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16  In the same way, let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Your light, your gifts, the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, are given to you; to show, to be and to demonstrate the Spirit to the world, they will build-up His Church and will lead many to praise God.

RESPOND:

So my commitment to the LORD and to His Church is that I’m going to use the gifts that the Lord has given to me, to fan into flame my own gifts and to exercise them, so that others in the church will be built-up and encouraged to fan their own gifts into flame too. I want to see our church full of folks on fire to serve Jesus with their lives, and in turn be used by Him, Spirit ignited, to see others brought into the Kingdom.

One Practical Way:

I shared about a prayer triplet that I’m in with two other men in the church. How we meet-up with one another to pray, read the bible, praise the Lord, hold each other accountable, share about our lives, and contact one another almost every day.

I encouraged others: “Do you know two others, brothers or sisters, that you could get together with during the week? This is on-top of or as well as your weekly fellowship group.” I explained, “This is getting smaller to grow bigger. Much smaller, and soon we’ll all be much bigger or better and stronger in the Lord”. Let’s form hundreds of prayer triplets to ensure every Christian is a growing Christian.

When you’re on your own, Satan can easily stop you, when you are two it’s a bit more difficult, but as the Bible tells us, “A Cord of Three is not easily broken”. Are you going to get into smaller groups to grow stronger for Jesus?

Have and awesome week, stick close to Jesus and be filled afresh with God’s Holy Spirit today.

The POWER to NEVER be ASHAMED with Jesus.

Not Ashamed

Daily Spirit & Word, 544: The POWER to Never Be Ashamed With Jesus.

Loyalty: It’s Rewards and Losses.

Good morning my friends, I’m often surprised afresh with something the Bible reveals and today I’ve had another revelation from God’s Word. It’s about LOYALTY to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Luke 9:24 24  For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.

Luke 9:26 26  If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

THE MAFIA: (The Family – Cosa-Nostra).

I was watching a documentary about the Mafia the other day. Trevor McDonald (ITV Correspondent and Interviewer). He traveled to America to meet some of the most notorious leaders, past and present of the Family The Mafia. It was very well done, because you got a sense of the fear and foreboding that must have permeated the society in New York and Chicago amongst Family members and those with whom they did business. Trevor focused upon some key individuals who’d betrayed the Mafia bosses many years ago, to save their own skin, but who were living in constant fear, with the knowledge that they could be killed any moment, because once you are Cosa-Nostra your in the Family for life.

To be a member of Cosa-Nostra; you have to swear an oath of obedience and fealty to the God Father, which is indicated by kneeling and kissing his hand. You’ll do what Godfather wants, when he wants it done, without any questions. As soon as you begin to question, the Family takes note and your loyalty is called into question. Any overt disloyalty within the Cosa-Nostra is met with swift justice: death.

Loyalty to Jesus will be rewarded, and disloyalty has its punishment.

Just before this section in Luke’s Gospel Jesus revealed to His Disciples that He would suffer and die upon the Cross. Perhaps, Jesus was not just showing them that He would soon die, but that when it happened, He was hoping His closest followers would prove to be faithful. We know how the story unfolds and how disloyal to Jesus they all were, how they abandoned Him and ran away when Jesus was arrested, how Peter even denied that He ever knew Jesus.

  • They were frightened for their own lives.
  • Peter was ashamed of being an associate of Jesus.

However, all of that took place before the Disciples were born of God’s Holy Spirit; After Pentecost it was very different, we see the Disciples transformed from timid, frightened, fearful individuals into the mightiest men of God, who were prepared to die for Jesus: And most of them did die, in some horrendous circumstances.

Jesus wants all of us to know that If we are true to him in the time we have on earth, then he will be true to us for all eternity. If our desire is to follow the teachings and words of Jesus in this world, no matter what the world says about us because of it, then in the Kingdom of Heaven Jesus will be proud to display us as one of his people and reward us. There are REWARDS IN HEAVEN.

However, if by our lives, the way we live here on earth, we disown Him, even if with our mouth we confess Him as Lord and sing praises every week, the day will come when Jesus can’t do anything other than disown us.

You see my friends, LOYALTY has it’s REWARDS and LOSSES. In God’s Kingdom when we are faithful, we’re going to be rewarded, when we are unfaithful, we’re going to be punished. It’s a simple as that. God our Heavenly Father keeps a record of every act, every thought and every attitude from the moment we’re born into His Family.

This is revealed in so many places in the Bible: The Cloud Of Witnesses:

Hebrews 12:1. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

The Witnesses: They are the ones who’re watching our lives from Heaven. When we appear before the Lord to receive our rewards in the Kingdom the Witnesses will come out. God Knows already, because He’s in us from the moment we confess Christ as Lord, but like any civil court here on earth, justice must be seen to be done and the witnesses will be called.

We often complain that “Big Brother” is watching us: Here in London you can’t go more than a few feet without being monitered by security cameras. Every street in London is littered with cameras. Also our Mobile phones can track all our movements down to a few inches. People complain that records are being kept, but my friends, Records have been kept IN HEAVEN on our every thought since the day we were born.

When you get to Heaven, will you be rewarded by Jesus? Will He be happy to see you? Will He run up to you and say, “Well done, good and faithful servant, come and receive the rewards awaiting you, because you’ve been faithful since the moment you were born of the Holy Spirit” or will it be something else?

EXCUSES: “I’m Only Human”:

It grieves me to my heart the moments I’ve deliberately chosen to be unfaithful to Jesus since I’ve known Him as my Saviour. I’ve excused myself in the past, by saying to myself, “I’m only human” or “It’s just my weakness, God will understand”. However, Jesus has made certain that we are without excuse, because He’s provided everything we need to remain faithful to Him every single day.

Just as the Mafia God Father provides back-up and security for his faithful Cosa-Nostra (Remember the Mafia is an Evil Force upon the earth), Similarly, Our Heavenly Father and Our Lord Jesus have provided everything we need for our back-up, security and success in the Kingdom Christian life. He’s given to each individual the POWER, the PRESENCE and the GIFTS of the Holy Spirit. He’s given us; Pastors, Teachers, Evangelists, Prophets and Apostles to guide, teach and strengthen us. He’s given us brothers and sisters to encourage us and to make life on earth a joy. We really have NO excuses for failure and we’re going to be suffering loss in the Kingdom for all our unfaithfulness. We are SAVED from Hell but not from lack of rewards. My friends, Jesus died for your every sin upon the Cross, so let’s serve Him every day as if He was coming back that day.

Serve Jesus Because You LOVE Him.

Surely such a prospect should propel us towards faithfulness. However, we don’t serve Jesus because we fear not being rewarded or even because we fear being punished for failures, we serve the risen Saviour because we LOVE Him. When we’re unfaithful, we just need to check out our LOVE for the Lord. If we love Him, we will obey Him. It’s as easy or hard as that. Get more loving for Jesus; be kind, compassionate, gentle, forgiving, humble, generous, faithful. When you NEED something in any of these areas of life; Just ASK and Jesus will be there to help you, immediately.

With Jesus we have the POWER to NEVER be ASHAMED: So let’s live every with with Jesus, in Jesus and for Jesus. Amen!

I’m looking forward to being welcomed into Heaven by Jesus; I’m longing to hear the words from His lips; “Well done, good and faithful Donald”… So I’m praying that with His help, I’m going to be FAITHFUL TO THE END.

RESPOND: Call upon Him now and ASK for the resources He’s longing to give you in order to help you be His faithful servant to the end.

Don.

Daily Spirit & Word: 543: Dare You To Be A Disciple.

The Kingdom Power To Deny Self.

“Lord I need Your fullness to help me to live like Jesus. Come Holy Spirit” Amen.

Good morning my friends, I’m feeling a lot stronger today and my back is well on the way to recovery. Praise the LORD! Last night, just before we went out to share the Gospel on the streets of West Norwood in London, some brothers and sisters were praying for me and my back felt much better afterwards. Then we had the most amazing time witnessing on the streets about the Lord Jesus. It was weird last night, because we bumped into more Christians than normal, but what struck me is what they said, “We also share our faith regularly”… Praise the LORD! More and more followers of Jesus are waking up to the fact that the UK IS a Mission Field and the Gospel needs to be proclaimed afresh in every generation until the Lord comes back again.

In the reading below I’m excited about the fact that some of those who were standing in the crowd would SEE the KINGDOM of God before they died. My friends, you too can and will experience the Kingdom with Jesus.

Luke 9:23-27 (NLT)
23  Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me.
24  If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.
25  And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but are yourself lost or destroyed?
26  If anyone is ashamed of me and my message, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in his glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels.
27  I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Kingdom of God.”

It’s like Jesus is daring us to be His disciples, “Go on, I dare you to be My follower, if you’re really serious then you must….”

When you do deny self and take up the cross, then you’ll see the Kingdom. If that was true for those that Jesus was talking with, He must have meant something other than His second return: He did 🙂 He meant they would see God’s Kingdom Power break into their lives after His crucifixion, death, resurrection and ascension. The Kingdom of God came when the Holy Spirit brought NEW LIFE and POWER to EVERY BELIEVER on the day of Pentecost. He came and filled everyone who had trusted in Jesus Christ’s death upon the Cross: God’s Kingdom definitely did come upon that generation, and it can come into your life too.

YBH? (Yes, But HOW?).

How can you see the KINGDOM today?

There are certain things that will accompany true faith in Jesus Christ.
The Passage in Luke 9:23-27 Above Make Those Things Crystal Clear:

Firstly: A Believer Will Deny SELF: (verse 23)
Jesus said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower (Disciple), you must turn from your selfish ways (Deny Self)…” NLT
or as the Amplified version tells us; Luke 9:23 23  And He said to all, “If any person wills to come after Me, let him deny himself [disown himself, forget, lose sight of himself and his own interests, refuse and give up himself]

What does it mean to deny self? Do you remember when Peter denied Jesus three times? Peter said, “I don’t even know the man”. Well what Jesus is telling us to do here is the same as that kind of denial to our selfishness, it’s like saying to your FLESH; “I don’t know you”… It happens when we’re tempted and tried to do or think or say something that wouldn’t be good for a follower of Jesus. It’s like me saying when I’m tempted to do something immoral, “I don’t know you Donald” … We need to deny ourselves every single day for Jesus.

Self Sacrifice: It’s like saying “NO” to your passions and desires that are contrary to your walk with Jesus. It really is a daily battle, that is why we need to come and be with the LORD Daily (Yesterday’s Teaching).

Denying Self: Is to ignore the very existence of oneself. It is to treat the self within each of us as if it did not exist. The normal human experience is to treat ourselves, to look after self interests, to think of self as if our self was far and away the most important thing in the world. The reality check is this; “It’s NOT all about you” or we need to say to ourselves, “It’s NOT all about me”.

Adverts & The Media: That’s why advertising works so well: Every advert appeals to SELF… “You need this” or “You Deserve This Product” or “You’ll LOOK great wearing this” or “Everyone will LOVE YOU when you get this” or “If you’ve got one of these everyone else will wish they were you”…. they know that appealing to the SELF sells stuff. No wonder Christianity is so unpopular these days, because Jesus is telling us to do the complete opposite of the world: YOU need to DIE to SELF. You need to say “NO” to yourself.

Now Jesus is declaring if “ANYONE wants to follow ME” If you are desiring to follow Jesus Christ today then you must forget that self exists.

Not only must we forget and deny SELF, we must KILL SELF. (Put it to DEATH).

Secondly: TAKE UP YOUR CROSS: Luke 9:23 (NIV)

Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

It is a DAILY dying to self (see yesterday’s teaching about DAILY).

But what does it mean; “take up his cross daily”?

Jesus knew all about Crucifixion long before He went to the Cross to suffer and die for the sins of the world. As a young boy growing up in Israel, when Jesus was about seven years old, there was a massive rebellion four miles away from where he lived with his mum Mary, dad Joseph and brothers and sisters. There was a man called Judas who led a rebellion against Roman rule and raided the Royal Armoury at Sepphoris. It would have left a deep impression on the young boy Jesus, because afterwards thousands of those rebels were crucified and they lined the roads with the bodies upon Crosses, everyone in Galilee would be in no doubt who was in charge, the Romans. Jesus said to people “You must deny yourself and take up your Cross and follow me” In other words, you must die to self.

St Paul carries on with this same theme of self-denial in Romans:

Romans 12:1 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.”

Someone has humorously said, “The problem with living-sacrifices is that they crawl off the altar”… Yes my friends, we do tend to shrink or crawl away from self-sacrifice, but that’s exactly what Jesus is talking about “Take UP your Cross” It really is a daily duty to follow Jesus and die to self.

Why would anyone in their right mind deny themselves like that? Why would you want to or be prepared to DIE for Jesus? Surely people who are prepared to die for a cause are FANATICS right? Look at the Jehadi Bombers who kill themselves, everybody thinks they are MAD.

Well, Jesus is not calling you to be a fanatical killer of others, but a killer of self’s passions and desires that lead you away from God. That’s why it is a daily battle, because the self is a living-sacrifice, it doesn’t die, it stays alive, so it must be killed and denied every single day.

Practical Application to LIFE:

Denying self: Means Saying “NO” to;

  • Bitching about others in the workplace.
  • Coveting what others have (Keeping up with the Smiths next door)
  • Greed: Having more than you need in life. Having more on your place. Having more money. Hoarding for self.
  • Rudeness: Saying not to being rude, telling rude stories, rude jokes. We all find some things funny, but it means taking no part in overt rudeness.
  • Drunkenness: We are permitted as Christians to drink, but we’re called by the LORD not to over-indulge in alcohol. You know how much is enough, so stop before you have too much. Say “No! I’ve had enough” Learn to stop.
  • Night Clubs: These are places that people flaunt themselves at one another. It’s OK to dance and sing and make merry, but we must be very careful how we conduct ourselves in the world.
  • Dress: How we dress oursleves as Christians is important too. Not to provoke anyone to sin in the way that we dress.. I’m not saying women or men should dress like Muslims, covering our whole bodies up, women even wearing a Burka to cover their faces. That’s just extreme! However, there are ways of dressing that can and will attract and arouse, making sexual overtones in the way we dress or look cannot be right for the follower of Jesus.
  • Movies, DVDs, Internet: Not watching movies that are Adult rated: They tend to have; Violence, Bad Language, Sexual Scenes. Any 18 rated movie or TV program will have these things in abundance today. Jesus doesn’t want you to use bad language and you should not be around or watch films that have it. Hollywood always has BLASPHEMY of the Lord Jesus in nearly every movie. How do you feel when you hear them saying “Jesus Christ” as a swear word? It makes me feel sick in the stomach. Notice Hollywood never says “Allah or Buddha or Ghandi etc” it’s always “Jesus Christ” that they blaspheme. Don’t give them your money my friends.
  • Money: Getting out of the habit of thinking that my money is my own for “My” life. “I’ve worked hard for it so I deserve to spend it on myself” NO! Everything you have is from God. He made the whole universe and He allows you to have a little in life. So a follower of Jesus will want to give generously to others and to God’s Kingdom work. Not keeping or hoarding what you have for yourself (Luke 9:24-25). If we try to keep our money, then we’re going to see it waste away, it’s rotting when it’s not working for the Kingdom.
  • WORK: We’re going to be working hard at our job, doing our best, but we’re not going to be climbing the ladder to success at the expense of others. A Christian will work and do their best, but they’ll be a pleasure to work with. You’ll be kind towards your colleagues and you’ll think how can I make this place a real success in the world. Christians will work to be an influence for good in the workplace.

Denying SELF is a REAL Sacrifice: But there is great reward awaiting, we’ll experience the KINGDOM today.

It’s like Jesus is daring us to be His followers; dare you to be a follower of Jesus Christ today 🙂

“DARE TO BE A DISCIPLE”

Let’s get our focus right today, Jesus said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me.” Trying to hang onto our independence will mean loosing out on the exciting and joyfilled experiencing His Kingdom today.

Denying SELF: Is jumping off the throne of your life and letting Jesus be the KING. It’s a decision every day to allow Jesus to rule your life as your King. Living your life every day for Jesus. To be able to DENY SELF and TAKE UP OUR CROSS every day, we’re going to need HELP. Thankfully, the Lord has been gracious and desires to enable us to LIVE like Him. He’s given you the Holy Spirit, the same Spirit that raised Jesus from death, He’s IN every born-again follower of Jesus.

Respond: Cry out to the Holy Spirit now and say; “Dear Lord and Heavenly Father, I can see that if I’m going to die to self and take up my cross every single day, then I need Your fullness to help me to live like Jesus, I invite you to come Holy Spirit, I’m open to what you want to do in my life today. In the Name of Jesus Christ I pray” Amen.

Hope you all have an amazing and wonderful experience of the Lord as you LIVE for Jesus in the world today. Go on, Jesus is daring you to be a Disciple, a follower of Himself today.

Don.

Dare You To Be A Disciple.

Jesus IS coming back to you TODAY

Take up your Cross Daily

Daily Spirit & Word: 542: Jesus Is Coming Back To You Today.

Stop & Start:

STOP being a SUNDAY Christian.

START being a DAILY Christian.

I call this ‘Daily‘ Spirit and Word for a reason: The Christian LIFE is meant to be a DAILY walk with Jesus.

Luke 9:23-25  “Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24  For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. 25  What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?”
2 Peter 3:1-9 1 Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking.
2  I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Saviour through your apostles.
3  First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.
4  They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”
5  But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water.
6  By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.
7  By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
8  But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.
9  The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

When the FIRE dies down:

When the fire dies down, how do you get it ABLAZE again? By blowing on the embers and feeding with fresh fuel.

We need the Holy Spirit to blow through our life and the fuel of God’s Word to keep the fire going.

Getting OFF the Boil:

Many people who come to faith in the Lord Jesus last only a few years. It seems that the fire they once felt dies, but it doesn’t die quickly, but by degrees. It’s like taking a pan of boiling water off the heat, at first it’s bubbling and dancing and spilling over the edges of the rim, but then it dies down and get colder, until at last you can dip your finger in and it’s completely cold.

So we have seen many professing believers, who once being on fire for the Lord Jesus, grow sooooo cold. What has happened? They’ve taken the pot off the stove. What do they need to do? Put the pot back upon the heat of the stove once again, and before long they will once again be bubbling and dancing and singing His praises.

My friends, they’ve taken their eyes off Jesus. They’ve lost their focus. They’ve begun to live the kind of Christian life as if Jesus was not there, as if Jesus could not see, as if Jesus does not care. It’s like a believer gets to the point of shouting, just like the scoffer, “Where is this Jesus?”

However, Jesus is inside every truly born-again believer, but one day, Jesus will come and ALL FLESH SHALL SEE HIM. But for now, He can only be seen through the eyes of faith. But even though at one time people who have known Jesus through the eyes of faith, that vision, that knowledge, that experience can diminish and dwindle and cool to the point of no direct experience or knowledge or perception that the saviour is within me.

What needs to happen to get the fire going again?

Don’t rely on being a SUNDAY Christian.

So many get into the BAD HABIT of letting their Christianity slip into a a ONCE A WEEK EXPERIENCE.

This is the worst form of Christianity: WHY? Because to exist as a Christian you are relying upon the PASTOR to feed you. You’ll look for a fleshly kind of experience of Christianity. One where you’ll get your BOOST and then go about your life as a ‘normal’ person the rest of the week. You’ll never last more than a few years on this kind of diet. Why? Because after a while, you’ll miss one week, then a few weeks will go by and you’ll miss another. You’ll enjoy those days that you missed ‘church’, so you’ll begin to look forward to skipping ‘church’ and look for excuses not to be there on a Sunday. SUNDAY Christians don’t last very long.

To really get your FIRE ABLAZE: STOP & START.

This passage above tells us how to get ON FIRE:

2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

REPENTANCE: The Key To Unlocking DIVINE FIRE.

FIRE: burns, it burns and cleanses, the fire of the LORD needs to come into your life, not just once a week, not just on a SUNDAY, but every single day. So STOP being a SUNDAY Christian and START being a DAILY Christian.

So REPENT: Ask the Lord to forgive you for your weakness and foolishness in thinking you could be a Christian just once a week.

Ask Him to forgive you for relying upon others to feed you with His WORD, when you should have been feeding upon Him and His Word yourself.

Ask Him to forgive you for depending upon a BOOST of experience of joy and fun on a SUNDAY and returning to the world for the rest of the week.

START:

Then START: Start opening up your own Bible.

Then START: Start being with Jesus in prayer.

  • PRAY: first and ask the LORD to feed your soul before you begin to read.
  • READ: Choose a Gospel to work through, slowly, every day. Read only very small portions. Don’t gorge yourself or you’ll get sick.
  • MEDITATE: Think deeply about what you’ve just read.
  • PRAISE: Worship the LORD: In song, singing your heart out to the Lord. Listen to praise music every day. But don’t just listen, join in with the praise.

SLOW-DOWN on PURPOSE:

I remember my dad giving us Ice Cream every single day for a week, we ate it gladly at first, but by the end of the week we were sick of the stuff. Finally my dad said, “Who’s for Ice Cream?” None of us wanted any.

Don’t over-indulge in God’s Word: But let it feed you, purposefully slow-down, eat a little and then consider God’s Word very carefully. Meditate upon God’s Word: Means thinking about what you’ve just read. Ask Him what He wants you to understand from what you are reading. Do this before you pray, do it before you rush away into your daily life. Meditating upon His Word is a KEY to knowing the mind of the Lord. It’s the way our minds are transformed and renewed:

Romans 12:2  “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Once you STOP being a Sunday only Christian, and START being a DAILY Christian: You’re mind will be TRANSFORMED and RENEWED: You’re life is going to be very different, because you’ll KNOW what God’s will is, His good, pleasing and prefect will.

You’ll be meeting with Jesus every single day, not just on a SUNDAY.

The FIRE & The GLORY

When the FIRE dies down:

When the fire dies down, how do you get it ABLAZE again? By blowing on the embers and feeding with fresh fuel.

We need the Holy Spirit to blow through our life and the fuel of God’s Word to keep the fire going.

  • However, your SUNDAY will also be very different as well, because you’ll come to worship already fired-up.
  • You’ll come ready to share what God’s been doing and saying during the week.
  • You’ll come to encourage others.
  • You’ll look forward to the gatherings of the saints with a much deeper and more lasting joy.

DAILY: Once you begin to meet with Jesus in His Word and seek the fullness of the Holy Spirit EVERY DAY, you’re going to be ABLAZE with the GLORY GLOW of the LORD. Your little pot will be bubbling, and dancing and singing in praise of the Saviour.

The LORD is NOT Slow in Keeping His Promise: Jesus wants to reveal Himself to you every day, not just when He returns at the Judgement. Not just on a Sunday through your Pastor or the worship experience, but every single DAY.

So STOP being a SUNDAY Christian.

START being a DAILY CHRISTIAN.

I’m praying for all who read this little word today, that you are going to get the FIRE going afresh in your life with Jesus. Amen.

Don.

HELPS: Get filled with the Holy Spirit.

Unmistakable End Time Signs

End Times, Last Days, Unmistakable Signs,

Daily Spirit & Word: 541: Unmistakable End Time Signs

It really made me laugh the other day, we were driving through South London and long before I spotted it my granddaughter shouted out, “can we have a McDonald’s?” I replied, “No darling, we’re no where near a McDonald’s.” To which she replied, “Oh yes we are Papa, look” Well, I was looking but I couldn’t see, she just kept pointing with insistent fingers, “Look Papa, there it is, McDonald’s, can you see it?” Far away, and I mean faaaar away, there it was, the tiny little golden arches of McDonald’s. She’s so clever, imagine being able to spot McDonald’s that far away? Needless to say, Papa had to drive to the McDonald’s, we had a lovely chicken sandwich.

Those guys at McDonald’s got it soooo right when they developed those unmistakable arches that look just like the outline of the tablets of the Ten Commandments. People know that sign and immediately trust it; we’re going to get a good feed under those arches.

You know my friends, Jesus revealed that before He comes back again in glory there will be unmistakable sings.

Matthew 24:32-35 “Now learn this lesson from the fig-tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33  Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door.
34  I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 35  Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”

What did Jesus mean when He said, “When you see all these things”?

The things Jesus is talking about are revealed before and after that statement in Matthew 24. You really do need to read the whole chapter a few times and you’ll begin to get a greater understanding. Read through Matthew 24 now (see here).

Unmistakable Signs: The fig tree buds and summer is near.

The Earth’s Unmistakable Sings of the End Times and the Return of Jesus Christ:

  • There’s going to be Civil Instability.
  • There’s going to be Political Instability.
  • There’s going to be Religious Instability.
  • There’s going to be Physical Instability.

Are there any signs like this in the world today?

We’ve got ALL OF THEM:

Looking For Signs: “Can you see it Papa?” Out of the mouths of babies…

2 Timothy 3:1-5 1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.
2  People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3  without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good,
4  treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—
5  having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.

The signs are indeed all around us: (As it was in the days of Noah: Matthew 24:37)

  • The Austerity Measures: In Europe and the UK are producing Civil Instability for millions.
  • The Political Tensions between Russia, Europe and the USA and NATO: Are producing Political Instability.
  • The Endless Pressure from Minority Groups: Causing Religious and Moral Instability for Millions.
  • The Environmental Issues: Food shortages, water shortages and disease and drought are causing Physical Instability for Millions of the world’s poorest people, they are dying needlessly every day.

I’m feeling for all those Greek people, with so much instability and the impossible debt burden placed upon them by the powerful and wealthy European states. It would be so easy to help them and to make Greece prosper again, however, Instability is all around us, and it’s not far from our own door here in the UK. On Saturday, we bumped into an Anti-Austerity Demonstration in London, thousands of people marching to protest against Government austerity programmes. It was a good-natured and a very well organised and controlled march, but the fact that thousands of people gave up a Saturday and walked in demonstration should not be taken lightly. In Carolina in the USA, again there was a peaceful march, but thousands of people made a march for PEACE… More and more people are becoming aware that things in this world are not the way they should be. We’re commanded by Jesus to pray; “Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will be DONE, on Earth as it is in Heaven”… Let’s keep praying for our world and God’s Kingdom to break through into the hearts of many. Pray for PEACE, let’s do what we can to help struggling nations and people.

Jesus doesn’t reveal WHEN He’s coming back, but He wants us all to be constantly READY. Just like those famous batteries (Every Ready), we’re to be charged up and ready to go. We’ll meet Him in the air, with everyone else who’s died in Christ. But He wants us to be prepared and ready for the day of His return. In the meantime, we’ve got such an urgent task to fulfill.

Let’s keep watch, look for the signs, pray and seek the Lord’s will in these last few days before He comes back again. There’s an urgency to our task of taking the Gospel to every soul who’s yet to submit to the Lordship of Jesus.

Don.

God’s Reward For Those Who Endure Persecution

Persecution of Christians

Daily Spirit & Word: 540: God’s Reward For Those Who Endure Persecution.

Standing Firm To The End.

Good morning my friends, we had an amazing visit from e-Gangs Website in church yesterday. It’s an off-shoot ministry of David Wilkerson’s “Teen Challenge”, they are going back to their roots, reaching people who’re involved in the street-gang culture and those who may be drawn into that way of life. Everyone who spoke yesterday had a background in drugs, imprisonment and gangs or street life. They gave powerful testimonies of how God had delivered them from the darkness into the light.

What struck me deeply was the fact that God can and will reach into the hearts of those that we deem ‘un-reachable’. There is no heart or soul that is not like an open book to the Holy Spirit. He can penetrate all the passwords and access the secret places. On the outside a tough gang member looks scary and must appear to be so to his friends, but more often than not on the inside is a frightened, frustrated and fearful little boy. He’s been looking for; family, security, friendship and fun all his life. He’ll find that in gang-culture and we also know that once a person comes to Jesus and surrenders, they’ll also get that in God’s Kingdom Family. Once you’ve got Jesus, you’ve got family and friends.

It was Paul’s wife who spoke powerfully yesterday from God’s Word about Jacob, who was touched in the HOLLOW PLACE and that’s what God needs to do with each and every one of us too; to touch us in the places of need: We fill that void with the things of this world, but they were meant to be filled with the one who created the world and gave us life.

Afterwards, I was speaking with someone who’s family didn’t understand what had happened to him since he trusted Jesus. They saw a change in his nature, character and lifestyle, but they were not yet ready for that kind of change and rejected him. So don’t be surprised if people don’t ‘get you’ once you get Jesus.

“Don’t be surprised if people don’t get you once you get Jesus.”

Mark 13:9-13 (NIV) Persecutions In The End Times.
9  “You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. 10  And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11  Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 12  “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 13  All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

Pilgrim’s Progress:

At the end of Pilgrim’s journey, just before the gates of Heaven, there was another doorway that led to Hell. The Christian must stand firm with Jesus Christ all the way to the end. He never promised us and easy ride through life. Jesus didn’t say, “Come to me and trust me as Saviour and everything will be OK from that point on”. In fact, Jesus warned His followers of the opposition and persecution they would endure for His sake. Just because they were followers of Christ, they’d be hated, lied about and betrayed.

What’s most difficult is the fact that members of a Christian’s own family would betray them, even when that betrayal meant death. This has happened my friends; in History and even today, Christians are being taken to courts, even here in the United Kingdom (UK), just for being obedient followers of Jesus Christ. We’re living in an increasingly ‘Christianophobic’ society; there’s a deep fear and suspicion of believers. Many things are being said about us; “Christians are narrow-minded”, “Christians are bigots”, “Christians hate people” etc…  These accusations are not new, the world has hated Christians from the beginning.

We’ll admit to following a ‘narrow-path’ that leads to eternal life, but that doesn’t mean we’re narrow-minded, quite the opposite in fact, because we know that the Gospel is for everyone, the good news is for all people on earth; that’s the most open minded kind of message I’ve ever heard.

“Christians are Bigots”: What about that statement? What is a Bigot?

Meaning of Bigot: A prejudiced person who is intolerant of any opinions differing from his own.

Well, we’ve got to admit that in some instances we’re guilty of being Bigoted. We do hold opinions, but they are not our own, they come from God. We don’t follow our own understanding or our own logic or reasoning, but we hold unswervingly to the opinions, decrees, dictates and commands of our LORD.

There is an element of truth in every false statement and characterisation of Christians. We can be seen as being bigoted because we will not be shaken from our belief that the plain meaning of God’s Word has a final say in any matter relating to life. However, what’s confusing for the people in the world, those who are still in darkness, is that not everyone who calls themselves ‘Christian’ actually follows God’s Word. It’s only those who are filled and empowered by God’s Holy Spirit who will endure all hardships, accusations and trials to the end.

  • Have you been feeling persecuted for your faith lately?
  • Are you enduring or are you feeling like you need to give in and follow the crowd, follow the world’s way?

Jesus has warned us that the world hates (cannot tolerate) committed followers of His teachings.

Not only will you experience this intolerant attitude from the world, but they’ll not be understanding either. They will not take time to sit down with believers and ask them, “Why is it that you think this way?”

Why? Why don’t they want to understand? Why will they run away from a knowledge and understanding of why Christians only follow God’s Word? It’s because deep down, they already KNOW, because God has written His Laws upon their hearts too.

Hebrews 8:10 (NIV) “This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.”

Hebrews 10:16 16  “This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.”

So people who don’t yet know Jesus as LORD, who are still in the darkness, already have God’s LAW (Moral, Holy Standards) written upon their hearts and minds. That’s why they don’t want to know why Christians will not move or change their minds about certain ways of living or being in the world today, because they already KNOW, they just don’t want to live God’s way.

Staying With Jesus To The END:

God wants you to persevere to the end: To HOLD Unswervingly (that could be called in a bigoted or narrow-minded way) to the hope we profess.

Hebrews 10:23-25 23  Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
24  And let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds. 25  Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Remembering HOW you were delivered from DARKNESS into the LIGHT is critically important for believers today: Because this will encourage you to endure to the END.

Hebrews 10:32-36  “Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you stood your ground in a great contest in the face of suffering. 33  Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. 34  You sympathised with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. 35  So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. 36  You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”

What is it that God has promised those who endure to the end? The CROWN of LIFE:

God’s PROMISE: The Crown of LIFE:

James 1:12 “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.”

If we keep in mind eternity, then we’ll always be able to endure any hardship.

This place (anywhere on earth) is NOT the Christian’s HOME or Home Country, because our HOME and our HOPE is HEAVEN.

It is my hope and prayer that every true follower of the Lord Jesus Christ will find fellowship, family and fun whilst here on the earth, but also that if and when things get tough, you’ll also be able to endure every hardship to the end. Praying for Christ’s indwelling power for an exciting week.

Have an awesome week, enduring all things for Christ’s sake.

Don.

Like A Woman In Labour Are the End Times.

End Time Prophesy Birth Pains

Daily Spirit & Word: 539: Like A Woman In Labour.

The End Times: Begins With Horrors.

Praise the Lord my friends, it’s the Lord’s Day. Sunday 21st June 2015. It’s also Father’s Day and I’d love to celebrate, but what a terrible week it’s been.  So many horrific and tragic events that have rocked the world. People are being killed every day, both at home and in many places around the world. Yesterday, we heard the news that a young baby a few days old had been savaged by a dog, a boy had been beaten and left for dead. In a church in America people at a prayer meeting have been murdered and yesterday in Europe a man drove a car into a street packed with Saturday shoppers. These events are shocking and horrific and our hearts and prayers go out to everyone affected by them. Many are left wondering where all this will end. Even President Obama was saddened to the core, in an address to the Nation he revealed the depth of his concern, that a modern nation like America, with all it’s technological advances and the rule of law, people are still running around killing innocent people.

In the Bible we are warned that we must be on our guard and be ready for the return of the LORD, but preceding His return there will be signs that it’s about to happen: these signs Jesus described as “the beginning of birth-pains”.

Mark 13:5-8 5  Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no-one deceives you.
6  Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many.
7  When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.
8  Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth-pains.

The Beginning Of Birth-Pains:

My friends, it’s Father’s Day and I am the father of five lovely children, all grown-up now, but I was at the birth of three of them (missing two of the births because I was at sea on my Submarine). I’m also the grandfather to eight amazing grandchildren and I’ve been in hospital behind a curtain when my own daughter was giving birth. So although I’ve not felt the horrific pain of labour, I’ve seen it first hand and every time it just leaves me feeling next to useless. I hate seeing people in pain and discomfort, but feel so completely inadequate because there’s nothing I can do to alleviate the suffering.

How do Birth-Pains Begin?

They begin suddenly: Birth pains are intense moments of cramps that grip a woman’s stomach. They begin with quite large gaps between the pains, but as the labour progresses so the frequency, duration and intensity of the cramps and pains increase. That’s what Jesus (and all the prophets) said it would be like before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.

Suddenly: These pains catch you by surprise: You could be out shopping, doing the ironing, playing in the garden, walking down the road or just sitting watching TV. All of which happened to my wife and daughters.

Suddenly: Means it will catch you by surprise: You are not expecting it. They’ll come at a time when you are not thinking about it.

Just like a prudent woman or married couple will prepare for the arrival of their baby, so Jesus is telling His followers “you too must be ready and prepared for those days.” Are we ready for the Beginning of Birth Pains?

Remember Birth Pains: They are infrequent and short to begin with with long-calm-periods in-between. However, it’s not long before they intensify in the magnitude of discomfort and agony and their frequency increases. The time between one contraction and another gets shorter and shorter.

NO SHAME:

With the almost instant reporting of news from around the world, we can observe that the frequency of intense suffering and the sheer level of the magnitude of the suffering is indeed growing. We’re seeing things that people do to one another and the horrific nature and frequency of these incidents is growing every day now. ISIS are doing things to people today that have never been done before, not to such an horrific degree anyway. Yes, there’s been horrors, like the Nazi concentration camps when millions were killed and murdered, but they did it in secret and there was a level of shame about what they were doing. However, with ISIS, there’s NO SHAME: In the name of their ‘religion’, they’re openly beheading innocent women and children, they’re raping women and young girls and joyfully celebrating their evil, to broadcast it around the world. It’s NEVER been so evil, not to that degree of open hostility towards the Commandments of the Lord. We have gay pride marches, where the evil practice of open homosexuality is paraded and celebrated by countless thousands and it’s growing in frequency and the degree of deprivation is intensifying, there’s shameless levels of nudity and expressions of sexuality. Those who are offended by these things are castigated as intolerant and even hateful. Christians are being taken to court for merely expressing their belief in God’s Word on these subjects and in the last few days our own Prime Minister stated that there would be a drive against what modern Britain views as ‘extremist’ people, who have a commitment to God’s revealed standards of morality and who’re teaching that Homosexuality is wrong. There is NO SHAME, but we shouldn’t be surprised or fearful for Jesus warned us and God’s Word in many places reveals the details about these end times. We’re seeing levels of corruption never seen before: Scandals; In Banking, In FIFA, In Governments etc… The End Times.

Traditional Christian Teaching Could Be Criminalised.

2 Timothy 3:1-5
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.
2  People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
3  without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good,
4  treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—
5  having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.

“With all these shameless and open murders and the moral decline of the nations, surely the END TIMES are upon us.”

This must lead us to the conclusion, the End Times are NEAR. Jesus is coming back soon, but are we ready. Are we getting ready for that day? The prudent parents of the expected baby get things ready. They’ll get bedroom furniture, clothing for the baby and all that a baby needs; bottles, nappies, wipes, cream, powder, changing mat, cott, crib, toys etc… How do we, those who believe and trust in the Lord Jesus, get ready? Jesus told us and in countless places in Scripture we’re commanded; “Watch & Pray”… Pray that those days will be shortened. Pray that people will be ready. Pray that many will be converted and be spared the most horrific events.

Many, myself included, believe that just before the “great tribulation” comes, all those who’ve trusted in Jesus will be ‘raptured’, I.E. We’ll be taken away and we’ll be with the Lord. However, there’s still the command to WATCH and PRAY.

Jesus also encourages the followers: “Do NOT be Alarmed”: Yes these events are horrific and tragic, but as we’ve seen from the response of those who’ve been attacked and murdered in Carolina, they’ve responded with true love, grace and mercy; “We forgive you”. What a wonderful message, what courage, what depth of hope those believers have in the Lord Jesus Christ. To say to a murderer when a loved one has been brutally murdered, “I forgive you” is only something that Jesus would enable a person to declare. So don’t be alarmed my friends, but be ready, watch and pray, because it’s coming our way too.

The End Times: The Last Days: As people become more and more ungodly, unholy and corrupt in their thinking, attitudes, and actions, we must continue to stand firm on God’s message in the Holy Scriptures: “Watch and Pray” and “Don’t Be Alarmed”.

May the Lord watch over you, this Lord’s Day.

Don.

P.S. Today in St Luke’s We’ve got a visit from a group of believers who’re reaching out to those in London who’re caught up in ‘Gang Culture’: They’re called “e-gangs”… Pray that the Lord will use them today to speak to many of us about His will for us in this endeavour.

End Time Scriptures:

The key statement is at the end of Mark 13:8: “These are the beginnings of sorrows.” The word translated “sorrows” means “birth pangs,” suggesting that the world at that time will be like a woman in travail (see Isa. 13:6-8; Jer. 4:31; 6:24; 13:21; 22:20-23; 1 Thes. 5:3). The birth pangs will come suddenly, build up gradually, and lead to a time of terrible sorrow and tribulation for the whole world.

2 Timothy 3:1-5 “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2  People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3  without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4  treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5  having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.”

Magnificent Ancient Monument Destroyed

Ancient City Destroyed

Daily Spirit & Word: 538: Magnificent Ancient Monument Destroyed.

End Times Prophesy:

Good morning my friends, we’ve heard recently in the news about how ISIS are destroying ancient sites of architectural interest. It’s a sad shame! However, just before Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion He fortold about the destruction of Jerusalem’s most wonderful buildings and the Temple of the Lord, how not one stone would be left upon another. It happened just a few years after Jesus’ death and resurrection.

A City’s Doom (Mk 13:1-2)
13:1-2 As they were going out of the sacred precincts, one of his disciples said to Jesus, “Teacher, see! What stones and what buildings!” Jesus said to him, “You see this great budding? Not one stone will be left on another which will not be thrown down!”

We begin our study of Mark Chapter 13 with the prophecies of Jesus which foretold the DOOM and DESTRUCTION of Jerusalem.

However, it’s good to have a good grasp or grip, an understanding and knowledge of the actual temple stones that the Disciples were pointing to when they were talking with Jesus that day. Why? Because those stone were REALLY HUGE.

The Temple which King Herod had built was one of the wonders of the world. It was begun in 20-19 B.C. and in the time of Jesus was not yet completely finished. It was built on the top of Mount Moriah. But instead of levelling off the summit of the mountain a kind of vast platform was formed by raising up walls of massive masonry and enclosing the whole area. On these walls a platform was laid, strengthened by piers which distributed the weight of the superstructure. Josephus tells us that some of these stones were forty feet long by twelve feet high by eighteen feet wide. It would be some of these vast stones that moved the Galilaean Disciples of Jesus to such wondering amazement.

The most magnificent entrance to the Temple was at the south-west angle. Here between the city and the Temple hill there stretched the Tyropoeon Valley. A marvellous bridge spanned the valley. Each arch was forty-one and a half feet and there were stones used in the building of it which measured twenty-four feet long. The Tyropoeon valley was no less than two hundred and twenty-five feet below. The breadth of the cleft that the bridge spanned was three hundred and fifty-four feet, and the bridge itself was fifty feet in breadth. The bridge led straight into the Royal Porch. The porch consisted of a double row of Corinthian pillars all thirty-seven and a half feet high and each one cut out of one solid block of marble.

The Holy Place:

About the actual Temple building itself, the holy place, Josephus writes;

“Now the outward face of the Temple in its front wanted nothing that was likely to surprise men’s minds or their eyes, for it was covered all over with plates of gold of great weight, and, at the first rising of the sun, reflected back a very fiery splendour, and made those who forced themselves to look upon it to turn their eyes away, just as they would have done at the sun’s own rays. But this Temple appeared to strangers, when they were at a distance, like a mountain covered with snow, for, as to those parts of it which were not gilt, they were exceeding white…. Of its stones, some of them were forty-five cubits in length, five in height and six in breadth.” (A cubit was eighteen inches.)

WOWzer! What a building!
It was all this splendour that so impressed the disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Temple seemed the summit of human art and achievement, and seemed so vast and solid that it would stand for ever. But Jesus made the astonishing statement that the day was coming when not one of these stones would stand upon another. In less then fifty years his prophecy came tragically true.

“Pride of man and earthly glory,
Sword and crown betray his trust;
What with care and toil he buildeth,
Tower and temple, fall to dust.
But God’s power,
Hour by hour,
Is my temple and my tower.”

Imagine if you heard on the News of saw in your newspapers the images depicting the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, how would you have felt? How would you feel if it happened today? No wonder the Jews were horrified by Jesus predictions.

My friends, as you read through Mark chapter 13, keep remembering that Jesus foretold the events that would happen; both in the near future and the distant future. We don’t know when the DAY OF THE LORD will come, but we should always be ready, just in case the Lord comes tomorrow or even today.

Have an awesome Saturday.

Don.

The Poor Widow’s Generosity

She gave all she had to live on

Daily Spirit & Word: 537: The Poor Widow’s Generosity.

A Measure Of Your Love

Good morning my friends. Have you ever come across someone who’s got a really generous heart? Someone who just loves to give? Someone who’s biggest thrill in life is to see other people happy?

It’s been my privilege in life to have met so many wonderful people like that, both Christians and non-Christians. Sometimes it’s the non-believers who put us to shame in the way they are just so giving. I’ve met people who don’t even know the Lord Jesus, but who’s hearts seem to have been touched by Heaven.

Mark 12:41-44 “Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42  But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. 43  Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44  They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

“She Put In EVERYTHING; All She Had To Live On”

Jesus Is Watching:

My first thought from this passage is; Jesus was watching: He’s sitting down looking at the crowds of people and watching what they are doing with their money. Then the Bible tells us about the Rich and the Poor and the amount that they give and how much they give reveals the condition of their hearts. It’s like Jesus is sitting and observing, measuring the level of their love for the Lord.

Jesus is watching us too my friends, everything we do is noticed by our Lord Jesus is Heaven. Not only does Jesus notice what we do, but what it is that’s motivating us. Jesus sees the motivations of our hearts. He knows why we do what we do.

So who did Jesus take note of that day in Jerusalem at the Temple Treasury?

Jesus Noticed The Rich:

They Put In LARGE amounts of money: It’s always impressive when you hear in the News about some very wealthy person giving an enormous donation to charity or even being overly generous to an individual. It touches the heart to see how people like Bill Gates from Microsoft (One of the world’s richest people) gives so generously. I’ve heard rumours that he gives away as much as he can, most often he gives secretly. But what did Jesus notice about the rich in Jerusalem that day? He noted that they “gave out of their wealth”, i.e. they could easily afford what they were throwing in. It wasn’t a real sacrifice, it didn’t affect their life of comfort, the amount they gave had no real or lasting impact upon what they could buy for themselves.

Jesus Notices The Poor Widow:

This poor widow put in only two very small coins, a fraction of a penny. Do you remember when we had coins that were smaller than 1p (One Pence)? When I was a boy growing up in Edinburgh, we used the old currency; Pounds, Shillings and Pence. My pocket money on a Saturday was a thruppence = 3 pence. It was a thruppeny bit.

To help you understand OLD MONEY and How much the poor widow had put into the temple treasury.

  • 2 farthings = 1 halfpenny
    2 halfpence = 1 penny (1d)
    3 pence = 1 thruppence (3d)
    6 pence = 1 sixpence (a ‘tanner’) (6d)
    12 pence = 1 shilling (a bob) (1s)
    2 shillings = 1 florin ( a ‘two bob bit’) (2s)
    2 shillings and 6 pence = 1 half crown (2s 6d)
    5 shillings = 1 Crown (5s)

Jesus noticed that the widow woman put in two very small coins: probably the equivalent value of two farthings. We don’t have very small coins these days, coins below the value of 1p (One Pence). So the amount in monetary value was so small as to be insignificant, yet Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.”

WOWzer! What’s Jesus like? He sees the HEART. He knew that she had given ALL she had. Why? Why would someone put everything they had to live on into the Temple treasury? She was being generous towards the work of the Lord.

The Temple:

Was God’s Holy Place on Earth. To the Jewish people it was the beating-heart of their religion. It was the place they’d come to worship the LORD, but in those days women were not allowed into the Temple, they had to stay outside in the Court of the Women. But there were twelve offering trumpets where money could be deposited, they were called trumpets because of their shape and the noise they made when money was thrown into them. The money given was to maintain the Temple workers, the Priests: and the upkeep of the Temple. So being generous towards the on-going work of the Lord was considered something every good Jew would do.

William Barkley said about Giving in Generosity:

(i) Real giving must be sacrificial. The amount of the gift never matters so much as its cost to the giver, not the size of the gift, but the sacrifice. Real generosity gives until it hurts. For many of us it is a real question if ever our giving to God’s work is any sacrifice at all. Few people will do without their pleasures to give a little more to the work of God. It may well be a sign of the decadence of the church and the failure of our Christianity that gifts have to be coaxed out of church people, and that often they will not give at all unless they get something back in the way of entertainment or of goods. There can, be few of us who read this story without shame. Barclay’s Daily Study Bible (NT).

(ii) Real giving has a certain recklessness in it. The woman might have kept one coin. It would not have been much but it would have been something, yet she gave everything she had. There is a great symbolic truth here. It is our tragedy that there is so often some part of our lives, some part of our activities, some part of ourselves which we do not give to Christ. Somehow there is nearly always something we hold back. We rarely make the final sacrifice and the final surrender.

(iii) Heaven Regards The Small Things: It is a strange and lovely thing that the person whom the New Testament and Jesus hand down to history as a pattern of generosity was a person who gave a gift of half a farthing. We may feel that we have not much in the way of material gifts or personal gifts to give to Christ, but, if we put all that we have and are at his disposal, he can do things with it and with us that are beyond our imaginings.

Our Greatest Example of Generous Giving:

Is the Lord Jesus Christ: He didn’t hold back, He gave His ALL so that we could benefit from His death:

1 Peter 2:24 (NIV) “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.”

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Jesus is ideal and wonderful, but you Christians – you are not like him.”

Let us prove Mahatma Gandhi wrong today:

God’s WORD for us today:

Be Generous, Give to the work of the Lord through your local Church: 1) For the maintenance of the Ministers. 2) For the maintenance of the building. And 3) {most importantly} for the mission of the Church to reach out and save souls for the Lord Jesus Christ.

Give Sacrificially: It’s going to hurt you, the widow gave ALL she had to live upon. There was no welfare in those day, but she still gave all she had.

Give Willingly: Don’t leave it to the Minister of church leader to have to prize your offering out of your wallets.

How’s your heart towards the work of the Lord today?

Go on, surprise your church leaders this weekend and give so much to the work of the LORD that it will blow their socks off. That widow has gone down in history, think what the LORD will say about you in Heaven.

Generosity towards the Lord’s Work is a measure of our love for Him.

Every blessing for an AWESOME weekend my friends.

Don.
